2016 VVCAL Reboot, Featured Now

2016 VVCAL Reboot: Main Information Page

Introduction

Hello, gorgeous crafter! Today I am shouting out the announcement for the reboot of my 2016 VVCAL! You may have heard of my 2018 VVCAL, 2020 VVCAL, and 2022 VVCAL. Well, those are my latest VVCAL blanket projects, and as you may know, I design and host the VVCAL every 2 years since 2016.

But on the odd-numbered years, I have been missing the VVCAL so much! I decided to start hosting a reboot throwback on the odd-numbered years. So the first reboot will be the 2016 VVCAL! This will not be a full length VVCAL, rather an abbreviated 10-week version and I will update the patterns as well if needed.

Here is what the schedule will look like over the next few years:

  • 2023 – 2016 VVCAL Reboot (Theme – Lovely names of special people)
  • 2024 – 2024 VVCAL (Theme – It’s a secret!)
  • 2025 – 2018 VVCAL Reboot (Theme – Beautiful Trees)
  • 2026 – 2026 VVCAL (Theme – It’s a secret!)
  • 2027 – 2020 VVCAL Reboot (Theme – Around the World)

How the Designs Look

Here are a few photos of how this blanket looked when I made the demos in 2016. A different join is pictured, but the join we work up will be awesome, I assure you! 🙂

And here is the amazingly popular wide lace border:

  • Catona 10g Colour Pack version – 3mm crochet hook

  • Terrazzo 10g Colour Pack Version – 4mm crochet hook

Stash busting? Follow along with your yarn weight as listed above, or create your blanket with any weight yarn and any size hook! I will be using my leftovers from the Scheepjes Colour Lab CAL Scrumptious Kit.

Metropolis Colour Pack Information

The 80 Metropolis mini balls in the pack are 10g each, and squares range from 4g to 6g. For the demo blanket, in order limit the amount of leftovers, I will be making 120 squares, 80 solid squares, and 40 striped squares, because you can’t quite get 2 squares from 1 ball unless you go down to a 2mm hook. If you want, you can just make 80 solid squares and then try to get more solid color squares out of any leftovers that are 6g.

I am using color No. 069 to join and border, and I also have a square made in color No. 069. If you would rather not have a square in the joining color, you can find a remnant that is 6g or more, and made a square with it instead of using 069.

I will not be assigning certain colors to the Name Squares and the Plain Granny Squares each week, nor will I show what colors are used in the striped squares. Since the motif and color layout is completely random, I find it too tedious to try and find exact colors for each square. Grabbing a random color will be much more peaceful! We will go over this each week as well. It’ll be fun to see the colors everyone chose!

Metropolis Pack Blanket Details

  • Measurements: Demo Blanket will be about 52x62in
  • Gauge: Squares measure 3.5in

Metropolis Pack Materials

  • 2.5mm hook
  • 1 x Metropolis 10g Colour Pack
  • I estimate 7 x 50g balls to join and border

Or you can head to the Scheepjes website to find a retailer near you!

Stash Busting: If you are stash busting a light fingering weight yarn, you can follow along with this pack’s demo blanket.

Metropolis Pack Layout

Coming soon!

The 120 squares will make a layout of 10 x 12 squares. I will make 80 solid color squares and 40 striped squares, and the 40 striped squares will be scattered randomly throughout the blanket. The color layout is totally random.

Metropolis Pack Schedule

This demo blanket is 120 total squares = 15 squares per week for 8 weeks, then join and border in the last 2 weeks or until you finish.

Weeks 1-5 (May 19 – June 16)

Each week, make 15 squares total: Make 3 Plain Granny Squares, 4 Striped Granny Squares, and 2 each of the Name Squares that are listed below.

  • June 16, Week 5: Mae, Johnny, Andrea, Lincoln

Weeks 9-10 (July 14 – July 21)

  • July 14, Week 9: Joining
  • July 21, Week 10: Border – Finish and block!

Catona Colour Pack Information

The 109 Catona mini balls in the pack are 10g each, and each ball makes 1 square. For the demo blanket, I will be making 108 squares, 64 Name Squares and 44 Plain Granny Squares. You can definitely go rogue and make all name squares if you like!

I am using color No. 105 to join and border, and a square will not be made in color No. 105, rather it will be used up in the join. I am omitting the 4 neon colors: 601, 602, 603, and 604.

For this pack, I will be borrowing the color layout from the 2020 VVCAL Blanket. I will not be assigning certain colors to the Name Squares and the Plain Granny Squares each week. Since the motif and color layout is completely random, I find it too tedious to try and find exact colors for each square. Grabbing a random color will be much more peaceful! We will go over this each week as well. It’ll be fun to see the colors everyone chose!

Catona Pack Blanket Details

  • Measurements: Approximately 58x70in
  • Gauge: Each square is 4in

Catona Pack Materials

  • 3mm hook
  • 1 x Catona 10g Colour Pack
  • 14 x 50g balls Catona in preferred joining/border color. I will be joining with Catona color 105 for my demo blanket.
  • Note: If you aren’t using color 105, swap out your chosen color motif color for 105 when it comes up in the CAL. For example, if you chose color 253, then when the color 253 motif comes up in the CAL, sub in color 105 instead and rearrange the squares slightly so that the layout still makes sense.

Stash Busting: If you are stash busting a fingering weight cotton yarn, you can follow along with this pack’s demo blanket.

Catona Pack Order Yarn

Find the Catona 10g Colour Pack at one of these shops.

Find the 50g Catona No. 105 at one of these shops.

Or you can head to the Scheepjes website to find a retailer near you!

Catona Pack Layout

The 108 square layout is 9 by 12 squares. Pictured are the squares from 2020 VVCAL because I am borrowing that layout since it was so popular. You can of course, mix around the squares however you like! There are 4 neon colors added into this pack after this layout was released, and those colors have been omitted. Also omitted here is the joining and border color of No. 105.

Catona Pack Schedule

There will be 13-14 squares made each week for 8 weeks, then the join and border in the final 2 weeks or until you finish them.

Weeks 1-4 (May 19 – June 9)

Each week, make 14 squares total: Make 6 Plain Granny Squares, and make 2 each of the Name Squares that are listed below.

  • May 19, Week 1: Rebecca, Ana Maria, Cecilia, Nicolas
  • May 26, Week 2: Darlene, Melissa, Michele, Rachel
  • June 2, Week 3: Delton, Mary, Sofia, Ashley
  • June 9, Week 4: Faye, Raymond, Gabriella, Beth

Weeks 5-8 (June 20 – July 7)

Each week, make 13 squares total: Make 5 Plain Granny Squares, and make 2 each of the Name Squares that are listed below.

  • June 16, Week 5: Mae, Johnny, Andrea, Lincoln
  • June 23, Week 6: Lupita, Laura, William, Alma
  • June 30, Week 7: Emily, Wanda, Rose, Sarah
  • July 7, Week 8: Teresa, Carolyn, Amanda, Crystal

Weeks 19-20 (July 14 – July 21)

  • July 14, Week 9: Joining
  • July 21, Week 10: Border – Finish and block!

Stone Washed / River Washed Colour Pack Information

For the demo blanket, I am using 2 packs of SW/RW. That makes 58 balls x 2 = 116 balls. Each ball makes 1 square. We will make a demo blanket of 10 x 11 squares for a total of 110 squares, and 2 more balls will be used up in the join and border. This leaves 4 balls that will not be used. You can see if another color matches your join and border color closely enough, and you can use more balls up in the join and border, but if not, then unfortunately these will be left out.

I will not be assigning specific colors to use each week. We will choose a ball at random since the motif and color layout will be totally random. You can always make a rainbow colorfade! I will show a few examples of a rainbow colorfade when we get to the layout.

SW/RW Pack Blanket Details

  • Measurements: About 65x70in
  • Gauge: Squares measure 4.5in

SW/RW Pack Materials

  • 3.5mm hook
  • 2 x Stone Washed / River Washed Colour Packs
  • 15 x 50g balls of preferred joining/border color. I will be joining with Stone Washed color 821 for my demo blanket.
  • Note: If you aren’t using color 821, swap out your chosen color motif color for 821 when it comes up in the CAL. For example, if you chose color 828, then when the color 828 motif comes up in the CAL, sub in color 821 instead.

Using 1 Pack Instead of 2

Note: You can use one pack instead and have 56 squares, for example, with a 7 x 8 square layout. Then you can use your join/border color plus a very similar color in your join and border, and then you will have used all 58 balls. I estimate if you use 1 pack, you will need 8 x 50g balls for the join and border.

Stash Busting: If you are stash busting a sport weight yarn, you can follow along with this pack’s demo blanket.

Terrazo Colour Pack Information

For the demo blanket, I am using 1 color pack of the Terrazo yarn. That makes 60 balls, and each ball makes 1 square. We will make a demo blanket of 7 x 8 squares for a total of 56 squares. I am using color No. 734 to join and border, so that mini ball will be used up in the join, which leaves 3 balls that will not be used.

Terrazzo Pack Blanket Details
