Announcement

The full 2020 VVCAL PDF pattern is up on Ravelry and Etsy! Includes entire pattern – squares, join, and border, and BOTH US and UK Terms PDFs are included. Yay!! The response has been overwhelming. I humbly thank you for your support.

Colorway Pages

Here are links to the individual colorway pages for this CAL, because now there is more information that differs for each colorway, and I wanted to make a separate page for each one. You can still come to this main page to see the weekly updates.

There are 4 versions with their own posts, all in Scheepjes Yarns:

Introduction

Hello, gorgeous crafter! Today I am shouting out the announcement for my 2020 VVCAL! You may have heard of my 2016 VVCAL and my 2018 VVCAL. Well, I have decided to make the VVCAL a biannual event, and I am so pumped to share the new squares with you.

I named the 2016 VVCAL squares after special people in my life, the 2018 squares after awesome trees that followers suggested to me, and these 2020 VVCAL squares will be named after cities all around the globe.

Social Media Hashtags: #VVCAL and #CypressTextiles

Here’s what to expect during the CAL:

  • The 2020 VVCAL will begin April 10th, and run through August 21st. It is a slow-paced CAL with 20 weeks.
  • Look for CAL posts here on this website (CypressTextiles.net) each Friday during the CAL.
  • The square patterns are in US Terms and UK Terms, written, chart, and video instruction form, as well as step by step photos.
  • Every Friday during the CAL, I will release new square patterns and we will make them and join them as we go, and add a zero-waste border at the end!
  • About halfway through, I might release the entire CAL condensed as a PDF for purchase.

2020 #VVCAL Blanket Information

Of course, these VVCAL squares will all coordinate with the previous 2 VVCAL squares, so by the time the 2020 VVCAL is done, you will have access to a total of 102 unique squares, all of the same final size and stitch count.

Mix and match, or just pick one and make a whole blanket with it! You can even swap squares as you go during the CAL. Don’t like a square? Swap it out!

And one more thing: This time around, if you are making a Catona blanket, you’ll make 2 each of the design squares. Well, if you don’t want to make 2 of each, you can always substitute the squares from the previous 2 VVCALs for your second one. Neat, huh? It’s going to be EPIC. Join me!

  • Measurements: Blanket will measure about 64x72in for all colorways/yarns
  • Gauge: Squares measure 4.25in for Catona, 6in for Colour Crafter, XXX for Stone Washed/River Washed
  • Notions: US Size 3mm hook for Catona, 4.25mm hook for Colour Crafter, 3.5mm for Stone Washed’/River Washed
  • Yarn: Scheepjes Catona or Scheepjes Colour Crafter or Stone Washed/River Washed (See below for quantity and colors)

2020 VVCAL Colorway Information

  • Catona: I have created 3 colorways in Scheepjes Catona, so you can find exact ordering details below.
  • Colour Crafter: I will be using my stash of Scheepjes Colour Crafter, but I will tell you exactly how much you will need in case you want to order yourself some.
  • Stone Washed / River Washed 10g Colour Pack: I decided to add this pack on as well – for fun!. You will need 2 of these packs to make the same size blanket pictured.

“Catona Colour Pack” Colorway

For this colorway, I used the 10g Colour Pack of Catona. This pack has 1 teensy 10g ball of every Catona color, and it is amazing. Look at the magnificent array it produces! Special thanks to Emily O’Kelley for using this pack for a previous VVCAL blanket on Instagram, and totally showing me that it’s possible to get a VVCAL-size square from one of those teeny skeins. THANK YOU EMILY!

Colour Crafter Information

There will be instruction for a Colour Crafter version of the 2020 VVCAL blanket. Here is how Scheepjes Colour Crafter compares to Catona. The Colour Crafter is on the left.

It is a DK weight yarn, versus the Catona fingering weight. So a different hook will be used, and fewer squares will be made. All of this info will be in the VVCAL weekly, so don’t be scared.

Colour Crafter Yarn Information

I did not create a specific colorway for Colour Crafter, but I am just using my stash. (Don’t worry, along the way I will document what color I am using and let you know.)

You will need:

  • US Size 4.25mm hook
  • 7 balls of Colour Crafter (100g each) for the squares
  • 5 balls for the join and border

Order Scheepjes Colour Crafter

Find the necessary balls of 100g Colour Crafter at one of these shops.

Or you can head to the Scheepjes website to find a retailer near you!

“Stone Washed / River Washed Colour Pack” Colorway

I had 2 of these packs on hand and I simply had to make a 2020 VVCAL with them. No explanation needed if you have seen these incredible color packs!

Image of squares coming soon – this was a last minute (but super necessary) addition 🙂

“Stone Washed / River Washed Colour Pack” Colorway Yarn Details

For this colorway, you will need:

  • 3.5mm hook
  • 2 x Stone Washed / River Washed Colour Packs
  • 9 x 50g Balls of Stone Washed Color No. 821 (or your preferred color)

Order Yarn for “Stone Washed / River Washed Colour Pack” Colorway

Find the Stone/River Washed 10g Colour Pack at one of these shops.

Find the 9 balls of 50g Stone Washed No. 821 at one of these shops.

Or you can head to the Scheepjes website to find a retailer near you!

Stash Yarn Notes

  • Fingering or Sock Weight: Follow square amounts in the Catona section above.
  • DK or Worsted Weight yarn: Follow square amounts in the Colour Crafter section above.
  • Sport Weight: The blanket in this CAL is 64x72in. With Sport Weight yarn, your finished blanket size will be slightly larger if you follow the square amounts listed for Catona, and slightly smaller if you follow the square amounts listed for Colour Crafter.

2020 VVCAL Schedule

There will be 4 slightly differing versions of this blanket each week:

  • The Catona 10g Colour Pack version
  • The Catona Shy Violet or Fresh Earth Colorway version
  • The Colour Crafter version
  • The Stone Washed / River Washed 10g Colour Pack version

Joining Method Options

For Catona 10g Colour Pack, Shy Violet, and Fresh Earth versions

For Stone Washed and River Washed 10g Colour Pack version

For stash busting DK, use any join you like!

Yay! I think that is all the information you need to know right now. I will see you again on April 10th for the first week! Get your yarn and hooks ready!

Hello, and welcome to the 2020 VVCAL Tips and Tricks – FAQ – post. Along the way, I have already had a few common questions. I plan to address those here for everyone to see. Thank you for stopping in!

Here’s a quick link back to the Main 2020 VVCAL Page!

2020 VVCAL Tips, Tricks, and FAQ

Can I join my “Multicolor” squares with a different color from the Catona 10g Colour Pack?

Yes! Here’s how: When your preferred joining color comes up in the CAL, you need to sub in Color No. 105 instead. Then you will simply use up your chosen color ball when you start joining.

Can I swap a square for one from the 2016 or 2018 VVCAL?

Of course! Just try to choose a square that does not have a lot of petals, or lots of popcorns, etc. Those type of squares may cause your 10g ball to run out before the motif is finished.

All of the squares below are good examples of squares you could substitute in. 2016 VVCAL // 2018 VVCAL

Is the 2020 VVCAL Granny Square the same one as the 2018 VVCAL Granny Square?

Yes! It is, so if you’ve done the 2018 VVCAL, the granny should be a breeze.

My Granny Square center is puffing out. What should I do?

You have 2 options for starting your Plain Granny Square, as you can see below. You can make 3-dc groups on Round 1, or you can make 2-dc groups on Round 1. If your square is puffing out in the center, switch to the 2-dc groups like you see on the right hand side granny square below. This is given in the pattern as an alternate way to work Round 1.

What if my Granny Square is larger than 4.25in with a 3mm hook?

You will need to swap out for a smaller hook until you make that 4.25in gauge.

My design squares are coming out smaller than my granny squares. Why? What should I do?

First, make the granny square. Then compare all of the other squares to the granny square. If the squares are within half an inch, you will be fine when you join them all together.

There could be many reasons for the gauge of your granny square to differ from your design squares.

  • If your dc (UK tr) sts are generally very tall, then your granny will be larger than your design squares. Learn more about the Golden Loop.
  • Since the pattern for the granny square is likely a familiar one, this square is often worked more loosely than the design squares. Folks tend to tighten up when they work a new and unfamiliar pattern. (Ever notice sometimes your gauge loosens up as a project goes on?)
  • Those are the common reasons for gauge discrepancy, but there are many more – even time of day, whether you are relaxed or tense, distracted or focused, etc.

What to do? If your squares are less than a half an inch variance in size, it will fix itself in the join. If it’s a large difference, consider working the larger motif in a smaller size hook to close the gap. Make sure your gauge is correct as well.

I’m using a 10g skein color pack. Can I go up a hook size for larger squares?

Yes! But beware some squares (especially the ones with lots of petals or popcorns) which use more yarn will make you run out if you use a larger hook. You can substitute in one of the other squares or even one from the 2016 or 2018 VVCAL.

How can I keep all of these squares organized for the color layout?

Here are some ideas that your fellow makers are suggesting:

  • Take a photo of the square and edit in text over it with the color number.
  • Roll up the square and put it into the yarn ball band. (Love this one.)
  • Wrap your excess yarn around the ball band so you can compare it later.
