Hello, lovely crafter! Today I want to share my latest free crochet blanket pattern progress, The Courtyard Blanket. The pattern will consist of different patterned panels which are then joined together, combining two of my favorite themes in crochet: wild color and unafraid patterning.
I have used color packs of Scheepjes Colour Crafter – more info when the pattern is released – but you can really use any gorgeous yarns you have. This would make a brilliant stash buster as well. I can’t wait to show you more in this WIP post.
If you haven’t seen my second crochet pattern book, Crochet Modular Blankets, check it out on Amazon! 18 full blanket patterns for you to try.
To make this blanket, you create the center panel, then the 4 outer panels, and the 4 corner squares, and then join them all up. It’s a make that will keep you engaged and never bored.
Here is the center panel in the middle of being constructed.

Matching Up Panel Sizes
In order to make a blanket like this, I have to make sure every panel fits together just right, so I make them alongside each other to get them to match up.

–
I created this corner square as a lacy element to echo the lacy motifs in the center panel of the piece.
My favorite part about this block are the little mini flowers around the center flower. Those two colors together are so pretty!

–
This photo is blurry! But here, I’m designing the little pieces that go at the corners of the center panel. Everything has to fit together just right so there isn’t any puckering, so there was a lot of frogging and redoing for this piece especially.
A lot of times the smaller pieces are actually the hardest to figure out.

–
As you look at these motifs, I can hear you saying “but, all those endsssssss!” Well never fear, because I have a huge blog post dedicated to blankets with a ton of ends to weave in.
Almost to the Finish Line
I loved putting this one together! Of course as the designer, during the process, I do it all out of order, so you can see I’m still working on the center panel while all of the other panels are finished, but sometimes that’s what has to be done in order to design it properly.

–
At times while I’m working, I think to myself, “is this too much color?” but then I just keep forging ahead and trust the process, because I know color mania is a good thing. Cozy maximalism is my design aesthetic after all.

Yarn Information
Okay, before I move on to more blanket pics, I want to take a break to show you the yarn that I used for this project!

Aren’t the colors gorgeous together?

–
I used all of the 36 colors, just like I did for the Spinwheel Blanket. It’s crazy how blankets can look so different even though they mix up all of the same colors. The background color makes a huge difference. Color theory is wild!

Why the Name Courtyard?
I chose the name Courtyard for two reasons, first and foremost, because it felt like a sense of community, with a courtyard being a place that like-minded people can convene and feel safe in good company. A third place to gather, hug, and laugh. We could all use more of this in our lives!
And secondly, I named this blanket Courtyard because it does resemble a stone floor design, and because it is actually inspired by hotel Salut Maroc in Morocco.
You can see the blue headboard in the photos below that inspired the motif shapes of the blanket center panel.

In this hotel, every room is a different splash of color, and it gives me endless inspiration. My colour Lab Blanket was also inspired by this hotel, and you know I have been mixing patterning for my entire design career.

More Courtyard Blanket Pics
Alrighty here’s the first look when I joined the panels together.
The center panel motifs are so yummy, and I want to make a whole blanket with just those. I think I will definitely be reusing these motif shapes in the future, because my art brain just doesn’t feel like I’m quite over the beauty.

–
YUM! I adored making this blanket. Never a dull moment, especially with all of that color.

–
And a zoom-out. Lovely 🙂

Another view – I took lots of pics.

–
And one more flat pic before the blanket in it’s fully-draped glory.
