Hello, y’all! Do you have all your squares joined and you need a border? Are you looking for something cute without a lot of bling? I think I have something for you!
The Checker Edging is a super simple idea that I’m sure has been used a zillion times, but I wanted to share since I was asked about it on a couple of makes.
My blanket model is the Gumball Blanket, which is the very first pattern I ever wrote – back in 2012! A great yarn to use would be the acrylic powerhouse, Scheepjes ColourCrafter. I get mine from WoolWarehouse but check my sidebar for more Scheepjes retailers near you.
I made the first ever Gumball blanket shown in the pic above (my photography skills have come a long way, and I yes I used to outline photos in black 😊😊), and someone messaged me asking if I had a pattern for it. I wrote back something like, “Yes! I’ll send it as soon as I get back home!” …..aaand I promptly got started writing the pattern.
Thank you to whoever you are for giving me the bright idea to start designing! I left my job that same year when my eldest started Kindergarten and pattern sales have helped to fill that gap a bit. 🙂
Okay, enough chatter! Here is the basic idea – this is just a tutorial because you can fit it onto any blanket type.
Checker Edging
US terms
Beg DC = (SC, Ch-1)
Round 1 (Granny Foundation): Work around your piece in Granny Stitch as follows: Join yarn in any corner, (Beg DC, Chain 3, 3DC) in same corner, (sk 2, 3DC) across to 2 sts before next corner. Sk 2, (3DC, Chain 3, 3DC) all in corner.
Notes:
I do not chain-1 between my 3DC groups because I feel like it’s too loose and open. I’m looking for a neat finish.
If you are using granny squares, please see this tutorial by Bunny-Mummy for a foundation that gives you a flat border (no frilling).
Continue around in this manner to first corner. 2DC in first corner to complete it, and join with sl st in Beg DC.
Round 2 (Granny): Work a granny square round, as seen in the photos below, placing 3DC groups between the 3DC groups of Round 1, and using the same corner type as Round 1. 2DC in first corner to complete it, and join with sl st to Beg DC.
Round 3 (DC Round): (Beg DC, chain 2, 2DC) in corner. DC in all sts around, making (2DC, chain 2, 2 DC) in 3 more corners to first corner. DC in first corner to complete it, and join with sl st in Beg DC.
Round 4 (Optional SC round – it looks neater if you do it, but I know it’s tempting to skip it!): SC in all sts around, making 3SC in all corners. Join with sl st in first SC.
Round 5 (Reverse SC – crab st): Work Reverse SC in all sts around. Do not make any extra sts around corner. This will leave you with nice rounded corners.
Here, I’ve done the border a bit differently with a similar result.
And that’s it! A sweet border fit for any blanket when it just needs that extra something.
I wanted to introduce y’all to a durable DK yarn that I just started using. Chances are if Scheepjes Colour Crafter isn’t already your go-to DK powerhouse, you have one that popped in your mind. I used to use a different one too, (probably the one you thought of!!) but the moment I laid hand on Colour Crafter, I never looked back.
Check out this rich palette – can you tell I’m amped for Fall? I’ll be using these colors for an awesome pattern coming soon! Y’all will love it!
This is only part of the selection that I have right now, and I suspect I’ll have all 93 (!) colors soon..
Here’s another palette that I’m using to update my Desert Bloom Blanket pattern. I love this yarn so much that I’m starting fresh with a whole new – larger – Desert Bloom in Colour Crafter.
So what’s the yarn like? Scheepjes CC is ultra squishy and plush. Acrylic and easy care. One of the reasons I like it is that there isn’t much of a sheen like some other brands. But it isn’t stiff either – super soft and velvety smooth. I know this sounds crazy, but I actually think it makes me crochet faster because it doesn’t create a whole lot of friction with the hook.
The yardage is wonderful on this economy ball: 100g = 300m.
If you’re ready for a change or want to try something new, give it a shot!
Check out the Velvet* version – a funky mix of faded glory that will have you hooking some fresh pieces!
Pick up Scheepjes Colour Crafter at Wool Warehouse* – you won’t be disappointed, I promise!

Wouldn’t it be lovely to mix and match shades of Colour Crafter and Velvet in the same project?!? I happened to have these coordinating shades of CC in my stash, but you could mix it way up and use any colors.. My head is already brainstorming!!
And since these colors with the acid bleached retro look (totally bringing me back to the 90s) remind me of the fabulous WestKnits, I just have to use every one of these babies in the same project – not a solid in sight.
Introducing my next free pattern (nameless!!): a biiiig sunburst-flower-type hexagon – 11 inch across, 10 inch tall! Colors on the left for flowers, colors on the right for joining. Even though I’ve made a zillion different variations on the Sunburst flower, it’s not out of my system yet. I just keep increasing the amount of petals lol – this bad boy has 24! I’ll be in the 30s in no time😜
Meanwhile, I cannot wait to make more of these hexies.. This yarn is fantastic! Spongey, great stitch definition, holds its shape without feeling stiff, and drop dead gorgeous.. I can’t put it down! Stay tuned for the pattern. ❤️❤️
Yep, that’s right! After putting a LOT of thought into it, I made the commitment to partner up with Scheepjes – makers of *stunning* yarns – and I’m just so excited to see what comes of our budding relationship!
What does that mean for you guys and gals? It means more variety on CypressTextiles.net – you’ll see I now have an entire section of my site dedicated to blogging my crafty Scheepjes endeavors.. And it also means I’ll be writing more patterns for pretty things along the way. 🙂
For now I think I’ll post a little yarny eye candy…
Just loooooook at some saturated rainbow-like gorgeousness:
And wowzers this pastelly heathery goodness – I’m swooning!!
Softfun Aquarel, Stone Washed, and Catona (25gr) – peep how teensy these li’l candies are! 2 are the length of one Colour Crafter!! 😍😍😍 Colorwork will be so fun and granny squares – oh I can’t wait until I have a spare minute!
VVCAL Ravelry ebook – Neat photos of all 33 squares, each with a link to its blog post. Favorite the patterns, add them to your queue, see others’ projects, and more!

Made by Wool and the Gang, Shiny Happy Cotton is a fabulous yarn! It is a worsted-aran weight, somewhere in between I’d say. It calls for a smaller hook, but it hurt my wrist to work at that tension with cotton. While I’d normally use a J for worsted or aran, I chose to try out an I size because cotton has a tendency to “bloom” and grow slack with use.
I read some reviews online that said SHC is splitty.. So I’ll say that if you hack away at it with the hook, you can split it, but if you keep even tension and control your movement, you’ll be just fine. The matte color look (despite the name!) is what drew me to this yarn, since most cottons have a heavy sheen. The smoothness, matte finish, saturated color, and beautiful stitch definition are worth the occasional split of the yarn.
And the color range is lovely! While there are currently a limited amount of shades, they are very trendy and off-beat colors like mustard yellow, spearmint, and navy.
I made my Wildflower Blanket pattern with Shiny Happy Cotton, and I couldn’t have been happier working with it. I was so pleased that now I have amassed enough SHC for a decent l’il stash! They have a brand new hot pink and a bright purple that are just fab. They’d go quite well with that beautifully bold blue in my Wildflower. Can’t wait to pick those up!
So run! Don’t walk! They’re always having some kind of sale or free shipping for a great first-timer opportunity to test it out. Highly recommend!

Check out Wool and the Gang for this Billie Jean denim yarn – made out of upcycled denim remnants straight from the jeans factory!
I’ve used this yarn in a large blanket project for my upcoming book (!) and I’ve really enjoyed working with it. Is it squishy soft? No.. But it’s not meant to be. This is a very natural denim feel with excellent stitch definition and not too stiff, but not smooshy either. It has beautiful drape and is quite weighty.
This big blanket will do best if it lives on a bed – perfect to warm you snuggling under the sheets in cold winter weather. I’m calling this piece “the northerner,” so the yarn weight and texture are just perfect.
Highly recommend this yarn. There are 3 shades so far, and working with all 3 is really lovely. You can see plenty of project inspo on the WatG Instagram and website. ❤️❤️❤️
Today I dyed yarn for the first time! I couldn’t have fathomed beginning a new hobby like yarn dyeing, but I certainly wanted to at least try it without committing to an expensive slew of new gear. Enter BQueen Collection!
At bqueencollection.com you can buy this beautiful kit which includes a hank of yarn and a precious little corked vial of natural dye material.
Here’s a good look at all the items in the Dye Kit. Those are gloves in the paper cup. Safety is important! You have to use a pot that you’ll dedicate solely to your dyeing adventures, and I had just the one.
My Emeril Lagasse pot set is absolutely gorgeous, but alas, the quartage is just not enough for my hungry family of six. So this wee one will be my dye pot!
Before its new job, it was an adornment anyway – on the pot hanger that my husband made for me 🙂 (Idea from andthismarinewife.com)
When I used the dye kit, I followed the detailed instructions to the T since I’ve never dyed yarn before. It was so easy! I loved the bubbly process and even enjoyed checking up on it simmering away. And three times my kids asked “what’s for dinner?” before I was able to convince them it was not spaghetti..
It came out just beautiful! The yarn color is fantastic – so sunny and even more saturated than in the photo. I couldn’t have asked for a better quickie project! Now I just need to get the monthly dye kit subscription and I’ll be all set. Swoon!!
I think I’ll add more photos when I cake it up and make something with this beauty. For now I’ll be stuck here on Step 8 of the dye instructions: Gawk… Lol just gawk and stare at the yarny beauty. Le sigh..
UPDATE!!
Looooooook
I couldn’t think of what to make! Then it dawned on me – why not make something I’m currently in love with? My Vibrant Vintage ebook (Social media #VVCAL) squares!
That goldenrod beauty is “Crystal” and boy does she look lovely in this – ahem – HAND DYED yarn 😊😊😊
Now all I need are 6 more luscious little vials of coloriffic “dyestuff” and 6 hanks of superwash merino and I can make a blanket!!! Oh goodness I’m excited!!
