Free Crochet Pattern: Sugarfrost Blanket (UK Terms)

Sugarfrost Blanket

Hello, friend! It’s been a long while since my last post, because I took some time away from creating new work to focus on my family. The prolonged solitary time of the pandemic had some effects on my kiddoes, and I wanted to really pour my energy into making them whole. Now we are all in a much better place, and I am even designing again!

I want to say thank you to everyone who messaged me and emailed me during the nine months or so that I have been on hiatus from my website and socials. I appreciate you greatly!

Today, I offer the pattern for my Sugarfrost Blanket, which was first featured in Inside Crochet, Issue 131. I can now publish the pattern on my website!

Below, you will find the free version (UK Terms). Find the US Terms Free Version here!

PDF Version

Find this pattern in a condensed ad-free PDF for a small fee in my Etsy Shop and on RavelryColoring pages for layouts are also included. Pattern PDFs for US and UK Terms are both included in the purchase.

Final Reveal: Crochet Nesting Baskets with Wooden Base

Hey, gorgeous crafter! Remember this WIP from a couple of weeks ago? I have been working on these crochet nesting baskets for a little while and have really enjoyed making something completely different from a blanket, but still a small and quick project. Also as a side note, every time I’m chugging along on a project, I’m jotting improvements in my notebook.

So, I already have a few more ideas to make crochet nesting basket sets using these wooden bag bottoms. And I did get many messages asking about these bag bottoms and where to find them. I just might start selling them along with some kits for baskets once I get the design just right.

Hello, lovely! Today I feel like taking a walk down memory lane, so let’s take a look back at everything I released in 2020! Crazy enough, the last time I did a year-end design roundup was for 2018, so I guess I skipped 2019. Although this doesn’t surprise me too much, as during odd-numbered years I take a bit of a break.

I went through all of my notes and my pattern platforms, and learned that I released 16 designs in 2020. And here they are!

Key Stitch Descriptions (US Terms)

Note: This pattern is in US Terms, but there is only 1 stitch used: single crochet, so if you are used to reading UK Terms, please know that you are using dc for this entire project. (US) sc = (UK) dc

Remember that the US double crochet = UK treble crochet, as this stitch is used in the border only.

  • chN chain N number of times
  • dc double crochet
  • MR make ring: slip knot, ch3, ss in third ch from hook
  • Rep repeat
  • sc single crochet
  • sp space or chain space
  • ss slip stitch
  • st stitch
  • yoh yarn over hook

Repeat and Bracket Guide

Square brackets [ ] are used for small repeats: 4dc, [2dc, 3tr, 2dc] 2 times

Asterisks *are used for repeats that include small repeats: *5dc, [1ch, 1dc] 3 times in next ch, rep from * 3 times

Round brackets ( ) are used when a string of stitches are worked into the same spot: (3tr, 3ch, 3tr) in next st

Stitch Counts are given at the end of rows where necessary, in the following format: – 12 dc, 3 sp

Tips and Notes

  • Weave your ends after each time you cut the yarn to avoid having to do them all at the end.
  • Please read the stitch guide for any abbreviations.
  • To get a neater result, I do not “chain up” for the first sc of the round/row. Jump straight into the first sc.

Instructions

This blanket is made by beginning a base triangle, and then working straight up in a chevron pattern until the first strip is complete, changing color along the way to make the stripes. The next panel is then made, joining it as you go using my PLT Join before each adjacent WS Row. All subsequent strips are made in this manner until the blanket is complete. A simple 3-round border finishes the piece.

Note: This pattern is written without instructions to change color and without mention of how many rows to make per stripe. Please use the guides below to help you decide these elements.

Color placement and stripe layout

The color placement is not an exact science, and every color in this palette looks wonderful next to all the others. I simply say that you will be a lot less stressed if you aren’t constantly checking a color chart or a stripe row amount, and you are instead just allowed to happily hook.

Colors: I put all of my colors in a basket and randomly drew them out to figure out my next color. The only thing I kept in mind was to use the colors fairly evenly throughout the blanket, just so that when I arrived at the final panel, I would still have a variety of colors to choose from. You don’t want one color running out halfway through the blanket. Other than that, feel free to use whatever color order suits your fancy! This palette is a riot, and you can’t go wrong. Also, some leeway is built into the yarn amounts to account for tension differences, so you have some wiggle room when it comes to playing with the color order.

Stripes: Here is my guideline for the stripes. Each stripe has a certain number of rows. For Panels 1, 3, and 5, I used only 4, 8, or 16 rows per stripe. You can see by the photos that on these panels, I made many 4-row stripes, a few 8-row stripes, and then just 1-2 16-row stripes. On Panels 2 and 4, I used only 8, 16, or 32 rows per stripe. The stripes for these panels are mostly 8-row stripes, with a few 16-row stripes, and then 1-2 32-row stripes. I purposely made the row amounts this way because I wanted the second and fourth panels to have very wide swaths of color, and the other panels to have busier color variety. Once you get into the groove, you will just be absent-mindedly making color stripes, and that is A-okay.

How to change color

For this project, here is how I changed color. When ending one color, fasten it off completely. To join on the next color, make a slip stitch in the chain space where the new color will begin. Start working directly into the same chain space for the new row. Note: Since this project is entirely linen stitch, you will only work into chain spaces throughout the blanket, with the exception of the simple border.

First Panel

Base Triangle

Row 1 (WS) MR, [1sc, 1ch] 3 times, 1sc, turn. – 4 sc, 3 sp

Row 2 (1sc, 1ch, 1sc) in first sp, [1ch, (1sc, 1ch, 1sc) in next sp] 2 times, turn. – 6 sc, 5 sp

Rows 3-12 (1sc, 1ch, 1sc) in first sp, [1ch, 1sc in next sp] across to center ch-sp, 1ch, (1sc, 1ch, 1sc) in center sp, [1ch, 1sc in next sp] across to final ch-sp, 1ch, (1sc, 1ch, 1sc) in final sp, turn. Do not cut yarn (unless you are making a color change.)

Straight Rows

Note: In this photo I have started joining the sides prematurely as I was keen to see how they would come together. When you make this panel, you will work it from bottom to top, complete.

Rows 1-144 1sc in first sp, [1ch, 1sc] across to center ch-sp, 1ch, (1sc, 1ch, 1sc) in center ch-sp, [1ch, 1sc] across to final ch-sp, turn. – 26 sc, 25 sp

Fill Corners to Square Off Panel

Right corner:

Rows 1-12 1sc in first sp, [1ch, 1sc in next sp] across to end, turn.

Row 13 1sc in sp, cut yarn and weave ends.

Left corner:

Work as for first side, matching stripe color.

Second – Fifth Panels

Base Triangle

Work exactly as for First Panel

Straight Rows

Work exactly as for First Panel, but before every WS Row, make PLT Join to previous panel as follows:

  1. Release loop from hook
  2. Insert hook front to back through first ch-sp of adjacent row on completed motif
  3. Grab loop and Pull Loop Through (PLT) to front of work
  4. Go straight to making first sc of row without making chain or slip stitch

With the PLT Join before each WS row, the panels are joined together as you go. Alternately, you may work 5 panels separately and sew them together for a different look.

Fill Corners to Square Off Panel

Right corner:

Work exactly as for Right corner on First Panel.

Left corner:

Work as for first side, matching stripe color, but add in PLT Join maneuver to join to adjacent panel.

Finishing

When all panels are complete, cut yarn and weave in all ends.

Border

Round 1 Join yarn color Iris 1277 with ss in corner st, [3sc in corner st, 1sc in the end of each row across to next corner] 4 times, being sure to make an equal amount of sc sts on opposing sides, ss in first sc.

Round 2 1sc in next st, 1ch – counts as the first dc of the round, [2dc in same st, 1dc in all sts across to next corner, 3dc in corner st] 4 times omitting final dc, ss in ch.

Round 3 [3sc in corner st, 1sc in all sts across to next corner] 4 times, ss in first sc, cut yarn and weave ends. Yay!! You’re finished! Do a happy dance!

Chevronnie Blanket: The Big Reveal!

Hello, lovely! Today I wanted to share a finish with you! The Chevronnie Crochet Blanket in Scheepjes Chunky Monkey is an idea that I had years ago. My goal was to create a chevron linen stitch blanket that would be worked up in join as you go panels. Read on for a little throwback photo of the first rendition of what would later become the Chevronnie Blanket. The final outcome is superb! Read on to see more!
