Free Crochet Pattern: Pink Pony Blanket (US Terms)

Hello, gorgeous crafter! Today I want to share with you my latest crochet pattern. I wanted to create a simple and fun pattern that could tie together any color palette. This piece would be great for a stash buster, or with a planned layout, but if you use DK weight yarn or another weight thinner or thicker than Aran Weight yarn, then you will need to adjust the number of motifs that you make to achieve the same blanket size. Resizing instructions are at the end of the pattern. You’ll love this one!

A note about the name, I was looking through Chappell Roan songs (currently obsessed), and thought Pink Pony Club would fit this blanket perfectly. The colors and the vintage, kitschy style of the blanket are well suited to her style I think! Then, I looked up the meaning behind the song, and it says the Pink Pony Club is a metaphor for having a safe space to exist, and I thought that was really beautiful. So Here you are! Pink Pony Blanket is born!

This Color Palette

I have worked with this color palette a few times, so I thoughtI would share those makes with you today for some inspiration! Of course you can choose any background color, and any 6 main colors (or any other amount) for this piece, but since this palette seems to be popular, I wanted to highlight it!

Repeat and Bracket Guide

  • Square brackets [ ] are used for small repeats: 4dc, [2dc, 3tr, 2dc] 2 times
  • Asterisks *are used for repeats that include small repeats: *5dc, [1ch, 1dc] 3 times in next ch, rep from * 3 times
  • Round brackets ( ) are used when a string of stitches are worked into the same spot: (3tr, 3ch, 3tr) in next st
  • Stitch Counts are given at the end of rows where necessary, in the following format: [12 dc, 3 sp]

Tips and Notes

  • Weave your ends after each time you cut the yarn to avoid having to do them all at the end.
  • Please read the stitch guide for any abbreviations.
  • To get a neater result, I do not “chain up” for the first sc of the round/row. Jump straight into the first sc.

Instructions

Sixteen bold and beautiful motifs come together to make this fun and stylish blanket. The way that the motifs are designed ensures that any color combination will feel pulled together. All 16 motifs are worked complete, to be joined with Slip Stitch Join afterward.

Note: If you are using DK weight yarn or another weight thinner or thicker than Aran Weight yarn, then you will need to adjust the number of motifs that you make to achieve the same blanket size. Resizing instructions are at the end of the pattern.

Make Motifs

Pink Pony Motif (Make 16 in colors according to Schematic)

Note: To achieve the same look as the demo motifs as shown in photos, work your motifs as follows.

Rows 1-4: Main Color (A, B, C, D, E, or F)

Rows 5 and 6: Background Color (G)

Rows 7-9: Main Color (Same color as Rows 1-4)

Rows 10 and 11: Background Color

Rnd 1 With Main Color, MR, beg 2dccl, [ch2, 2dccl] 5 times, ch2, ss in beg 2dccl. [6 2dccl, 6 sp]

Rnd 2 Beg 4trcl in first ch-sp, [ch2, 4trcl in same sp, ch2, 4trcl in next sp] 6 times omitting final 4trcl, ss in beg 4trcl. [12 4trcl, 12 sp]

Rnd 3 Beg 2trcl in first ch-sp, * [ch2, 2trcl in same sp] 2 times, 2trcl in next sp, rep from * 11 times omitting final 2trcl, ss in beg 2trcl. [36 2trcl, 24 sp]

Rnd 4 Beg 3dccl, [ch3, 3dccl in same sp, 3dccl in next sp] 24 times omitting final 3dccl, ss in beg 3dccl, cut yarn. [48 2dccl, 24 sp]

Rnd 5 With Background Color, ss in any sp, 5sc in 24 sps, ss in first sc. [120 sc] 

Rnd 6 Ss in next sc, beg pc in next st, [ch5, sk4, pc] 23 times, ch5, ss in beg pc, cut yarn. [24 pc, 24 sp]

Rnd 7 With same Main Color, ss in any sp, 7sc in 24 sps, ss in first sc. [168 sc]

Rnd 8 Ss in next 2 sc, [1sc, ch5, sk6] 24 times, ss in first sc. [24 sc, 24 sp]

Rnd 9 Beg 2dccl in first ch-sp, * [(ch2, 2dccl) 2 times in same ch-sp, ch2, 2dccl in next ch-sp] 2 times, (ch2, 2dccl) 2 times in same ch-sp, ch2, 1sc in next ch-sp, 3dccl in next ch-sp, (ch3, 3dccl in same sp) 4 times, 1sc in next sp, ch2, rep from * 3 times omitting final 2dccl, ss in beg 2dccl, cut yarn. [20 3dccl, 36 2dccl, 8 sc, 56 sp]

Rnd 10 With Background Color, ss in first ch-sp of Rnd 9, 2sc in same ch-sp, * 2sc in next 7 ch-sps, sk 1 ch-sp, [2trcl in next ch-sp, (ch2, 2trcl in same sp) 2 times], 2 times, ch5, rep from [ to ] 2 times, sk 1 ch-sp, 2sc in next ch-sp, rep from * 3 times, ss in first sc. [48 2trcl, 64 sc, 36 sp]

Rnd 11 [1sc in first 16 sc, 2sc in next 4 ch-sps, 7sc in corner sp, 2sc in next 4 ch-sps] 4 times, ss in first sc, cut yarn, weave all ends. [156 sc]

Joining the Motifs

Lay out motifs to match schematic, or create your own layout. Join motifs together using the following Slip Stitch Join instructions. Motifs will be joined across in rows, and then the blanket is rotated to join the columns.

Starting at the right side of the blanket, hold the right-most two motifs from the first and second row with wrong sides together, and attach yarn with a slip stitch through the corner sc sts. Working through both loops of both motifs, make slip stitch in each stitch to join the motifs, working across, and making sure not to make the slip stitches too tight. Work from the first corner sc to the next corner sc.

When the end of the first pair of motifs is reached, pick up the next two motifs, and continue slip stitch join, working across until one side of the motifs is joined as before. Continue across until all of the motifs in the first two rows are joined in a line. Cut yarn.

Repeat this join with the second and third rows of motifs, and again with the third and fourth rows of motifs.

Rotate your project and repeat these instructions, joining the columns of motifs. At this point all of your motifs should be joined to form your blanket body, and the piece is ready for a border.

Work Blanket Border

Rnd 1 Join Background Color with ss in any corner, [3sc in corner, sc evenly across to next corner] 4 times making sure the stitch count is the same on opposing edges, ss in first sc.

Rnd 2 [(1sc, ch5, 1sc] in corner st, [ch5, sk3, 1sc] across to next corner st, ch5] 4 times, ss in first sc.

Rnd 3 * 1sc in corner sp, ch3, make pompom, ch3, 1sc in same ch-sp, [ch3, make pompom, ch3, 1sc in next ch-sp] across to next corner sp, ch3, make pompom, ch3, rep from * 4 times, ss in first sc, cut yarn and weave ends.

Finishing

Weave all remaining ends, and block blanket if desired to open up the lace.

Yay! All done! Give yourself a fist bump!

Resizing your blanket

This pattern is written so that you can make the blanket in any size, with any thickness of yarn and the appropriate hook. In order to create a larger blanket, you can make the layout as many squares wide or tall as you like.

If you have used a thinner yarn than in the pattern, then you will need to use more squares to get the same size finished piece. Then, the border is written for any size blanket, so it will still fit.
