Introduction

Hello, gorgeous crafter! Today I am shouting out the announcement for my 2022 VVCAL! You may have heard of my 2016 VVCAL, my 2018 VVCAL, and my 2020 VVCAL. Well, those three VVCAL blankets are made with squares, and they tie up nicely in a neat bow in my VVCAL Mega Pack which you can find on Etsy or Ravelry.

For the 2022 VVCAL, I wanted to do something different, so I decided to change the game with hexagon motifs. This is going to be a very exciting make, as I know many of you are very interested in making a hexagon blanket, but are looking for new ways to create the layout or start joining them.

Theme

Yes we will have a theme! Let’s look at the themes of VVCALs past:

  • 2016: Names of important people in my life (This was before I knew the VVCAL would become what it is today!)
  • 2018: Beautiful Trees
  • 2020: Gorgeous Cities Around the World

And the 2022 theme will be… The Cosmos – Get ready to nerd out with me!

Social Media Hashtags: #VVCAL and #CypressTextiles

This page will be updated with new information every Friday from now until the 2022 VVCAL is over on July 15th.

Here’s what to expect during the CAL:

  • The 2022 VVCAL will begin March 4th, and run through July 15th. It is a slow-paced CAL with 20 weeks.
  • Look for CAL posts here on this website (CypressTextiles.net) each Friday during the CAL.
  • The hexagon patterns are in US Terms and UK Terms, written, chart, and video instruction form, as well as step by step photos.
  • Every Friday during the CAL, I will release new hexagon patterns and we will make them, and join them, and add a zero-waste border at the end!
  • About halfway through, I will release the entire CAL condensed as a PDF for purchase.

It is a DK weight yarn, versus the Catona fingering weight. So a different hook will be used, and fewer hexagons will be made. All of this info will be in the VVCAL weekly, so don’t be scared.

This is not my exact yarn stash at this moment, but here is an example.

Colour Crafter Materials

I did not create a specific colorway for Colour Crafter, because I am just using my stash.

  • US Size 4.25mm hook
  • About 900g for motifs, and 3-500g for the join, depending if you choose narrow or wide join, plus about 400g for border

Colour Crafter Order Yarn

Chunky Monkey Information

There will be instruction for a Chunky Monkey version of the 2022 VVCAL blanket. It is a chunky weight yarn, versus the Catona fingering weight. So a different hook will be used, and fewer hexagons will be made. All of this info will be in the VVCAL weekly, so don’t be scared.

Here is how Scheepjes Chunky Monkey compares to Catona. The Chunky Monkey is on the right.

Chunky Monkey Blanket Details

  • Measurements: Approximately 52×54” for narrow join. For this large of a layout, I do not recommend the wider join because it will be heavy. Proceed as you wish!
  • Gauge: See measurements below – about 29g per motif
  • Note: There will be one size layout offered for this version during the VVCAL, but you can make any size blanket you like! I will give tips for resizing your blanket
