Prismalux Blanket: Free Crochet Pattern (US Terms)

Hello, lovely crafter! Today I want to share a crochet pattern that I have been working on for the past couple of weeks! The Prismalux blanket is an idea that I have had for a quilt-inspired design that involves lots of bright rainbow colors and florals mixed in.

This versatile blanket pattern is inspired by fabric quilts which mix patterns together to make an eye-catching piece. There is a lot of thought that goes into every part of this blanket, and you will definitely enjoy the different ways you can use this pattern. Enjoy and happy crafting!

Yarn used in pattern:

  • 1 x Pack Stone Washed and River Washed Colour Packs can be found at Wool Warehouse and on Amazon 
  • Full 50g balls of Stone Washed can be found at Jimmy Beans Wool, WoolWarehouse, Amazon
  • 6 x Stone Washed 801 Moon Stone, 4 each of the rem River Washed colors in the Yarn Color Key

I used 50g balls of Stone Washed 801 Moon Stone, and 50g balls of River Washed in a rainbow array for this project, plus a pack of the SW and RW 10g balls, but this is definitely the type of design that will help your remnants and scraps shine! The flowers can be made with different color remnants, and then any yarn in a rainbow range will work. I will talk more about this further in the post!

Repeat and Bracket Guide

  • Square brackets [ ] are used for small repeats: 4dc, [2dc, 3tr, 2dc] 2 times
  • Asterisks *are used for repeats that include small repeats: *5dc, [1ch, 1dc] 3 times in next ch, rep from * 3 times
  • Round brackets ( ) are used when a string of stitches are worked into the same spot: (3tr, 3ch, 3tr) in next st
  • Stitch Counts are given at the end of rows where necessary, in the following format: [12 dc, 3 sp]

Tips and Notes

  • Weave your ends after each time you cut the yarn to avoid having to do them all at the end.
  • Please read the stitch guide for any abbreviations.
  • To get a neater result, I do not “chain up” for the first sc of the round/row. Jump straight into the first sc.

Instructions

This blanket is created by working up the motifs in the amounts given, and arranging them according to the Motif Placement Chart, referencing the Schematic to see the motif orientation. The 40 Log Cabin type motifs (Motif numbers 1-8) are worked completely without joining, and then Motif Numbers 9-14 are worked with a border round which joins onto the surrounding log cabin squares. In other words, Motifs 9-14 are what joins the squares together to make the blanket body.  A simple blanket border is added and then your blanket is ready to be admired!

Important Note: The next three motif types will join all of the motifs together to make the blanket body as you go. On the final round of the motif, you will work a joining method to join all 4 adjacent motifs onto the motif in progress. If the motif is on the outer edge, you will work across that side without any joining.

All motifs should now be joined together and the Blanket Body is complete.

Blanket Border

Rnd 1 Join Yarn B with ss in any corner, [3sc in corner st, sc across to next corner] 4 times, ss in first st.

Rnd 2 Beg dc in corner st, * 2dc in same st, (ch3, 1sc in top side of prev st) – picot made, 3dc in same st, [sk3, (2dc, picot, 1dc) in next st] across to next corner, sk3, 1dc in corner st, rep from * 3 times omitting final dc on third rep, ss in beg dc, cut yarn and weave ends.

To finish blanket, weave any remaining ends, and block blanket if desired.
