Heirloom Collection Blanket: My Latest Work in Progress

Hello, lovely! I recently got some yarn in the mail – always a joy! – and I just have to tell you about it. If you love Colour Crafter then you will love “Scrumptious”, this new yarn from Scheepjes! If you are working up the Colour Lab CAL, you might be trying out the Scrumptious Kit, and if so, you already know how plush and soft this yarn is. If you haven’t used it yet, I recommend giving it a shot!

I already have a plan in mind for this yarn, so I ordered specific colors, but of course, I have my Colour Lab CAL Scrumptious demo kit yarn as well, and I just might cook up a smaller project for my leftovers! For now, I wanted to show you the color palette for my upcoming blanket design using the Scrumptious yarn. Read to the end for a sneak peek at my work in progress!

Look out for this free pattern on March 3rd! Grab your yarn so you can be ready. Details below!

Delft Blue Style Pottery and Leafy Houseplant Inspiration

Choosing colors is sometimes a daunting process, but for this project I pulled a color combination out of my mental archives that I have been wanting to use for a long time. The shades of Delftware pottery and leafy green plants together has me very inspired!

This inspiration photo has been in my favorites for quite some time, and I am so happy to finally put my creative thoughts into a design project.

I created a little inspiration board with a few images from a search. What I am going for is clear! This piece will feature a blanket of motifs with the addition of the gorgeous greenery that always seems to accompany blue and white pottery collections.

I cannot wait to work up this design for you, and it will be released as a freebie here on my website! Let’s take a look at the yarn I used so that you can scoop some up for this project. The sneak peek preview photos have been getting a lot of attention on social media, so I have a feeling this one will be a hit. Definitely consider grabbing the yarn before the rush!

Scheepjes Scrumptious Yarn

For this blanket, I chose the cozy Scrumptious yarn. Here is how it looks up close.

Below, you can see the Scrumptious kit for the Colour Lab CAL. I wanted you to be able to see the pretty color range how it looks in real life and natural lighting.

The color range is outstanding! It’s truly a unique spread of color. I love the muted tones and how well the colors could be mixed together across the whole range.

My WIP Color Palette

The colors I have chosen for this project are:

  • No. 352 – Butterfly Pea Flower Mousse x 2 balls
  • No. 335 – Raspberry Rock Candy x 2 balls
  • No. 302 – Buttercream Icing x 4 balls
  • No. 336 – Green Tea Eclairs x 1 ball
  • No. 319 – Matcha Chocolate Brownie x 1 ball
  • No. 349 – Rainforest Cake x 1 ball

Aren’t these three blues just perfect to mimic the pottery?

And you cannot forget the leafy greens that I am going to put around the border for an elegant finish to this piece.

The star of the show will be the blues and white, and of course you can continue with the blue shades for the border if you wanted to! But I could not resist the addition of an homage to the lovely plants.

I thought if it were tough to find the Scrumptious Yarn since it is so new, you could use an alternate suggestion. Let’s take a look at a couple!

Alternate Yarn Options

This blanket is a large throw size. Perfect for a couch or chair, and great for decor.I have two alternate yarn suggestions for you! I’ll remind you what the Scrumptious palette looks like, so you don’t have to scroll up to compare.

Colour Crafter Yarn Palette

Colour Crafter yarn is the same gauge as Scrumptious, so it is a great swap. The yarn amounts will be the same for Colour Crafter as well.

Head to Jimmy Beans Wool or WoolWarehouse to shop Colour Crafter through my affiliate link.

  • No. 1302 – Dokkum x 2 balls
  • No. 1003 – Middelburg x 2 balls
  • No. 1001 – Weert x 4 balls
  • No. 1824 – Enschede x 1 ball
  • No. 1826 – Franeker x 1 ball
  • No. 1062 – Dordrecht x 1 ball

Catona Yarn Palette

Catona yarn could be a lovely choice because the stitch definition is perfection. It will show off all of the intricate stitching beautifully. I will say the yarn weight is thinner, so the project will be smaller. If you want a larger piece with Catona or another thinner yarn, you can simply add more motifs. I will discuss resizing in the pattern. I’m not sure of the yarn requirements for Catona because I haven’t tested it out yet!

  • No. 164 – Light Navy
  • No. 247 – Bluebird
  • No. 106 – Snow White
  • No. 212 – Sage Green
  • No. 515 – Emerald
  • No. 391 – Deep Ocean

Motif First Drafts

When I first started doing some yarny sketching, these are the two motifs that I came up with. Eeeeeep is it not gorgeous??

I will likely make a few tweaks to these before I release the pattern next Friday, but I’ll still use these mock-ups in the final blanket, just for efficiency.

And the first mock-ups all joined together. I really loved these first two, and it took me ages to pick up this project again, but I’m glad I did!

Motifs Final Drafts

Now that I have pretty much nailed down the designs, I can show you each one and how the project is looking with them all joined together.

Take a look at the third design I created. This one just may be my favorite! I love how the majority of the motif is the darker blue, and I’m in love with the flower. Part of me wants to make a full blanket in just this motif with a multicolor layout. I’m tempted to pull yarn for it, but I don’t have enough hours in the day..

Remember this one from the rough draft motifs above? I haven’t tweaked it yet, but there’s just something about that lighter blue rough floral outline just after that dark blue bobble round near the center. It’s irking me, and I want to rework that part!

On this fourth motif, I decided to design sort of a “filler” motif to break up the detailed floral patterns.

I do have some delft-style pottery that is geometric in nature instead of floral, and so I think this pattern still fits the theme.

Here is another motif from the rough drafts, and I think I’ll keep this one just as it is. I love it!

Originally I was going to design only four motifs for this blanket, but for some reason I thought adding a fifth motif design would allow there to be more variety in the blanket. So here is the start of the draft for the fifth design. I love it already!

And look, this one turned out to be the most intricate one! The only part that I am iffy on is that lighter blue second-to-last round. It looks a bit sparse and also looks a little messy. I’ll be working on that!

Full Blanket Plans

For the rest of the blanket, I’m going to make the center panel all of these hexies and I might add a couple of solid white ones in there – like 3-4 of them, but I’ll have to see how I feel about it. For the half-hexies at the edges, I might use greens and white with leafy stitches, and then for sure the border will be leafy greenery with white accents. Very crisp!

I’m using my PLT Join, and I think I’ll be setting the hexies “on point” like this. It looks nicer!

Here is the WIP with that fifth motif joined on. Beautiful!

And an angled close-up!

Plus Bonus: The flat lay photo that broke my social media hehe – everyone loved this photo! 😍😍😍

So happy to feature a small handful of my huge blue and white pottery collection!

Edited to add: I have to throw this curveball to you! I decided to make a sixth motif, and wanted to add it in to this post.

I’m so excited to show you my finished blanket and release the free pattern on March 3rd, next week.

Thanks again for stopping by! Happy crafting to you,

Rachele C.
