Free Crochet Pattern: Joy Garden Blanket (US Terms)

Hello, friend! I hope you are having a great week so far. Have you gotten any hooky in? If not, be sure to prioritize your interests and make some time for yourself.

Today, I have a special offering that is long overdue! My Joy Garden Crochet Blanket progress photos have been a hit on my social media, and I am so proud to bring the pattern to you today. This pattern uses 1 x Scheepjes Metropolis 10g colour pack and 3 x 50g balls of a border color, but you can use any yarn that you prefer with the appropriate hook for that yarn.

I am so pleased to give this pattern to you in a free version as usual! Below, you will find it in US Terms. Click here for the UK Terms free version!

PDF Version

Find this pattern in a condensed ad-free PDF for a small fee in my Etsy Shop and on RavelryPattern PDFs for US and UK Terms are both included in the purchase. Help support my work with this convenient PDF.

Materials

  • US Size 2.5mm hook
  • Tapestry needle for joining and weaving ends

Yarn + Affiliate Links

1 x Scheepjes Metropolis 10g Colour Pack – Find this colour pack at my affiliate link below.

3 x Scheepjes Metropolis 50g ball in desired border color. I used 071 for my blanket border. Find 50g balls of Metropolis at my affiliate link below.

Important Color Notes

There are 80 colors in the pack, and we use them as follows:

  • 78 colors for the motifs (60 half hexies and 18 squares)
  • 1 color (the same color as your border color) to be used up in the border

My layout schematic leaves out color 071 because that is my border color. If you want to use a different border color, then just find your border color in the schematic and sub in 071 for that motif instead.

78 motif colors plus 1 border color equals 79, so there will be one 10g ball left out. I chose to leave out color number 072 because it is very similar to my border color. So similar that I used it up in the border as well, just to avoid waste. You can get creative and choose a border color that has a similar enough shade match so that you use them both up!

If your chosen border color doesn’t have a close enough match, you can just choose whichever color you want to leave out of your blanket, and just make sure you update the layout schematic. The layout colors are completely 100% randomized, so it will be okay if you accidentally mix something up.

Measurements: Blanket measures 40x42in

Repeat and Bracket Guide

  • Asterisks *are used for repeats that include small repeats: *5dc, [ch1, 1dc] 3 times in next ch, rep from * 3 times

  • Stitch Counts are given at the end of rows where necessary, in the following format: [12 dc, 3 sp]

Tips and Notes

  • Weave your ends after each time you cut the yarn to avoid having to do them all at the end.
  • Please read the stitch guide for any abbreviations.
  • To get a neater result, I do not “chain up” for the first sc of the round/row. Jump straight into the first sc.
  • Read carefully through the entire pattern before beginning.
  • “Ss in 1 ch” or “Ss in 2 chs” means to slip stitch into that number of chains of the first chain space.

Instructions

This blanket is created by making each motif and joining it onto the blanket body as you go. Each piece will be joined immediately to the blanket. If you would like to work your blanket out in the wild, you can stop just before the final joining round, and just wrap up the motif in your bag and join it onto the blanket when you get back home. Once all of the blanket body is complete, a wide textured border is added.

Motifs have been written to maximize the yardage on the 10g Metropolis ball to achieve the largest possible motif, so there are no 3D elements on the motifs, such as bobbles, popcorns, etc.

Schematic

This schematic includes all yarn numbers for color pack yarn placement. If you are using stash yarn or just a completely different yarn, you can ignore these yarn numbers. The order that the motifs are created and crocheted onto the piece is added to the Schematic as well.
