Hello, gorgeous crafter! Today, I have another WIP to FO reveal for you. I am so determined to finish these blankets and telling you about it is keeping me accountable. As I complete each blanket, I will be updating the WIP entry In the WIP pile reveal post. There isn’t really any order that I am finishing these in either, so expect them to be fairly random! I tried to organize them in a way that made sense, but after all was said and done, it just made the most sense to go with my creative gut and finish whichever one I wanted to work on next.
So, here is my 2020 VVCAL demo blanket using the Catona 50g balls in a Springy color palette that I called “Shy Violet”. I didn’t use all of the motifs, and this is a smaller blanket, like 40x54in. I’ll fill in more details along the way!
You can find these patterns here in my Ravelry Shop, in my Etsy Shop, or in my own Online Store.

I’ll be adding in FO pics and links to all of the WIP to FO blog posts on the WIP pile reveal post.
Gathering and Working Up Motifs
When I made all of the demo motifs for these patterns, I worked about 3-4 iterations of each motif until the design was to the point that I wanted it to be. Suffice it to say there are a LOT of motifs that were made. I kept all of the slight variations that were made before the final motif drafts, and I used them for the different color palette blankets.
Here below, you can see a mix of some of the motifs, and the ones to the left of the photo are mostly where the Shy Violet palette squares are.

And here’s another shot of some of the shy violet motifs.

I ended up laying out the motifs and figuring out how many more I wanted to make of each color, and I just worked up extra motifs, using patterns that I enjoyed making most.
One thing I love about the VVCAL is that when I do the layouts, I don’t pay any attention at all to the “pattern” or “design” of the motif – only its color. So the texture ends up randomly dispersed, always in a gorgeous way. So, it doesn’t matter if there are multiple of one design, and only 1 of another. The color layout is what matters the most.
When I first started the joining method demos, I used the Celtic Lace Mini II Join which is showed below. But, I later ended up frogging that and using a more narrow join, which I’ll show later on.

Some of My Favorite 2020 Motifs
There are about 35 unique motifs designs in each VVCAL, and I wanted to show you some of my faves from 2020. Here are my top 7 favorite motifs! Each VVCAL has a theme, and this one was worldwide cities, so I named each motif for a city.
Vienna Motif
My favorite part about this motif are the precious picot petals.

–
Hong Kong Motif
I’m in love with the sweet little sunflower at the center. This one is so dainty and cute.

–
Las Vegas Motif
I focused on creating little petals at the edges, and then adding popcorns in the center for some depth. Lush! This is definitely one of my top faves.

–
Barcelona Motif
This is another fave of mine. It’s simple, but the visual impact is huge.

–
Amsterdam Motif
Eeeeeep! I just love this one! So much texture in the puff sts. I really tried to see how many long skinny petals I could use in this pattern, and that’s why it looks this way.

–
Tokyo Motif
Another study in subtle texture, this dainty motif features eyelets and popcorns, and the petals around the middle make the center flower stand out beautifully.

–
New Orleans Motif
This motif is striking with the bicycle spoke center and then opulent popcorns.

–
Creating the Layout
I made a randomized color layout for this piece, and joined the motifs with a tan background yarn. You can peep another favorite motif of mine at the top right, the Munich Motif. Love that one!

–
I’m using the continuous flat braid join, which you can find in that free tutorial that I linked. The join is textured and stately, but narrow and quick.

–
This blanket was super fun! Those golden motifs really give a pop of color.

–
Finished Blanket Photos
And here is that final blanket! One of the things I love most is that the layout has nothing to do with the design, and focuses on the color of the squares. So, the plain granny squares are randomly distributed among the textured design squares.

–
I just love how springy this color palette is. The border is just a little eyelet and a small scallop.

–
Here’s one with one of my assistants, Momo. I love the mix of dense and openwork lacier stitches. The texture is plentiful, but subtle enough not to be too overwhelming.

–
A close-up of another area of the blanket. That bubble-gum pink color is the absolute best.

Just gorgeous!
