FO No. 2 of 19: Spring Palette 2024 VVCAL Blanket

Hello, gorgeous crafter! Today, I have another WIP to FO reveal for you. I am so determined to finish these blankets and telling you about it is keeping me accountable. As I complete each blanket, I will be updating the WIP entry In the WIP pile reveal post. There isn’t really any order that I am finishing these in either, so expect them to be fairly random! I tried to organize them in a way that made sense, but after all was said and done, it just made the most sense to go with my creative gut and finish whichever one I wanted to work on next.

So, here is my 2024 VVCAL demo blanket using the Catona 50g balls in a Springy color palette. I didn’t use all of the motifs, and this is a baby blanket, like 30x30in. I’ll fill in more details along the way!

I’ll be adding in FO pics and links to all of the WIP -> FO blog posts on the WIP pile reveal post.

Gathering and Working Up Motifs

When I made the demo hexies in this color palette, I didn’t finish all of the motifs, and I kind of abandoned the project. If you didn’t know, I got a book deal before the 2024 VVCAL started! So I had to rush to finish and schedule all of the posts, and I was olny able to completely finish a couple of the demo blankets that I had planned.

Because of this, there were just a short stack of motifs in this color palette, and as I mentioned in the previous FO post, I borrowed (stole!) 9 motifs from this palette to fill in that blanket and add another row to it.

You can find these patterns here in my Ravelry Shop, in my Etsy Shop, or in my own Online Store.

I ended up laying out the motifs and figuring out how many more I wanted to make of each color, and I just worked up extra motifs, using patterns that I enjoyed making most.

One thing I love about the VVCAL is that when I do the layouts, I don’t pay any attention at all to the “pattern” or “design” of the motif – only its color. So the texture ends up randomly dispersed, always in a gorgeous way. So, it doesn’t matter if there are multiple of one design, and only 1 of another. The color layout is what matters the most.

Some of My Favorite 2024 Motifs

There are about 35 unique motifs designs in each VVCAL, and I wanted to show you some of my faves from 2024. Here are my top 6 favorite motifs!

Pansy Motif

My favorite part about this motif is the six little leaves and double-popcorn flowers around the edge.

Daffodil Motif

I’m in love with the sweet little flower at the center, and the teeny treble bobble round. This one is so dainty and cute.

Hawthorn Motif

I focused on creating a little daisy at center, and then adding popcorns around for some depth. Lush!

Lavender Motif

This is one of my top faves. You may know that one of my favorite ways to add texture to a piece is with those treble bobbles. The 2-treble clusters add an interesting type of thin flower petal, in contrast to the wider petals that usually appear in motifs.

Belladonna Motif

Eeeeeep! I just love this one! So much texture in the popcorns. The center popcorns are made with double crochet stitches, and the six outer ones are made with treble stitches for some variety.

Wallflower Motif

Another study in subtle texture, this dainty motif features puff stitches and popcorns, and the holes around the middle make the center flower stand out beautifully.

Creating the Layout

I made a randomized color layout for this piece, and joined the motifs with a white background yarn. The layout I chose would require four half-hexagons down each side.

I’m again using the Single Crochet PLT Continuous JAYG for Hexagons, which you can learn with my free pattern. Here is a video tutorial if you like that more!

You can see that some of the motifs aren’t completely finished, so I had to complete them along the way. It was quite fun to look back at the patterns!

Finished Blanket-

And here is that final blanket! I chose to use the Lacy Half Hexie, or Half Hexie C, from the 2024 VVCAL pattern. You can find that pattern here. That motif works great if you use the same color as the background.

I just love how springy this color palette is. The deep magenta really pulls it all together for a nice contrast. The colors look very different – much brighter – when you add the white background.

The honeycomb of a hexagon layout will always draw me in, as hexies are my absolute first love when it comes to crochet design.

Here’s a close-up. I love the mix of dense and openwork lacier stitches. The texture is plentiful, but subtle enough not to be too overwhelming.

A close-up of another area of the blanket.

And one highlighting the pretty border that I used. This one is just three rounds, a single crochet round, an eyelet double crochet round, and then a round of treble bobbles to finish off.

And finally, here’s the blanket all folded nice and neat. One of the great things about Catona yarn is that it creates a thin and strong fabric.

Peep the Hawthorn Motif here in the lighter pink – love, love, love. So, another FO in the books! Just 17 more! lol….

Thank you for dropping in to see my latest FO – No. 2 of 19! Hope you have a great week, and happy crafting!
