Dutch Rose Blanket CAL

Dutch Rose Blanket CAL: Border Pattern (US and UK Terms)

Welcome to the Striped Corner pattern for the Dutch Rose Blanket CAL! You will find both US and UK Terms here on this page.

Materials

  • For full yarn list for both colorways, please see the Main CAL Info Page.
  • We will be using a size 3.75mm hook, or whatever hook size you need in order to get gauge.

Gauge

Gauge for this section is not as crucial, but if your border is rippling, I recommend going down a hook size! And if you consistently have an issue with rippling borders, then definitely start with a smaller hook from the beginning.

Repeat and Bracket Guide

  • Square brackets [ ] are used for small repeats: 4dc, [2dc, 3tr, 2dc] 2 times
  • Asterisks *are used for repeats that include small repeats: *5dc, [ch1, 1dc] 3 times in next ch, rep from * 3 times
  • Round brackets ( ) are used when a string of stitches are worked into the same spot: (3tr, 3ch, 3tr) in next st

Tips and Notes

  • Weave your ends after each time you cut the yarn to avoid having to do them all at the end.
  • Please read the stitch guide for any abbreviations.
  • To get a neater result, I do not “chain up” for the first sc of the round/row. Jump straight into the first sc.
  • Read carefully through the entire pattern before beginning.
  • “Ss in 1 ch” or “Ss in 2 chs” means to slip stitch into that number of chains of the first chain space.

Written Instruction

Note: We will fill the triangle gaps at the bottom edge of the blanket, and then add the border. Color notes are included in the instructions below.

Fill Triangle Gaps

Using any color, fill each little zig-zag dip independently as follows. There are 4 gaps on the Small Blanket Version, 6 gaps on the Medium Blanket Version, and 8 gaps on the Large Blanket Version.

Row 1 With RS facing, join any color yarn with ss in corner st of right-hand side motif, 1sc in same st and in next 19 sts, 20sc on left-hand side motif placing final sc in corner sc, turn. [40 sc]

Row 2 Sk first st, (1sc, ch3, sk2) 6 times, 1sc in next 2 sts, (ch3, sk2, 1sc) 6 times, turn. [14 sc, 12 sp]

Row 3 Ss in first ch of ch-sp, beg dc in same ch-sp, (1sc, 1hdc, 1dc) in next ch-sp, (ch1, 2dc in next ch-sp) 3 times, ch1, 1dc in next 2 ch-sps, (ch1, 2dc in next ch-sp) 3 times, ch1, (1dc, 1hdc, 1sc) in next ch-sp, 1dc in final ch-sp, turn. [18 dc, 2 hdc, 2 sc, 8 sp]

Row 4 Sk first st, ss in 3 sts, (1sc in next ch-sp, ch3) 3 times, 1sc in next 2 ch-sps, (ch3, 1sc in next ch-sp) 3 times, turn. [8 sc, 6 sp]

Row 5 Ss in first ch of ch-sp, beg dc in same ch-sp, (1sc, 1hdc, 1dc) in next ch-sp, ch1, 1dc in next 2 ch-sps, ch1, (1dc, 1hdc, 1sc) in next ch-sp, 1dc in next ch-sp, turn. [4 dc, 2 hdc, 2 sc, 2 sp]

Row 6 Sk first st, ss in 3 sts, 1sc in 2 ch-sps, cut yarn and weave all ends. [2 sc]

Repeat the same process to fill each consecutive triangle gap, using a different color for each one.

Add the Petal Lace Border

Note: For a “no waste” border, I used remaining colors randomly. When I ran out of a color, I attached the next color with a “surgeon’s knot” and continued. For this reason, I did not list the colors I used for the border, nor did I instruct to cut yarn after rounds, or join new yarn.

These written instructions are for the Small Blanket Version. A word on resizing the blanket border to fit the Medium or Large Versions, or any size blanket. The general formula for the Round 1 st count is as follows: (3sc corner, repeat of 12 + 7) 4 times.

For the Medium Blanket Version, I recommend working Round 1 as: Using any color, ss in top right corner of blanket, (3sc corner, 199sc, 3sc corner, 271sc) 2 times, ss in first sc.

For the Large Blanket Version, I recommend working Round 1 as: Using any color, ss in top right corner of blanket, (3sc corner, 235sc, 3sc corner, 283sc) 2 times, ss in first sc.

Rnd 1 Using any color, ss in top right corner of blanket, (3sc in corner, make 139sc evenly across short side, 3sc in corner, make 163sc evenly across long side) 2 times, ss in first st. [616 sc]

Rnd 2 * (1sc, ch2, 1sc) in corner st, (ch2, sk1, 1sc) across to next corner st, ch2, sk2, rep from * 3 times, ss in first st.

Rnd 3 (Beg dc, ch3, 1dc) in corner ch-sp, * [2dc in next 2 ch-sps, (1dc, ch2, 1dc) in next ch-sp] across to within 2 ch-sps of next corner, 2dc in next 2 ch-sps, (1dc, ch3, 1dc) in corner ch-sp, rep from * 3 times omitting final corner, ss in beg dc.

Rnd 4 Beg 2dccl in first ch-sp, * (ch2, 2dccl) 4 times in same sp, ** ch2, 1sc between 2-dc pairs, ch2, (2dccl, ch2) 2 times in ch-2 sp, 2dccl in same sp, ch2, 1sc between 2-dc pairs, ch2, (2dccl, ch3, 2dccl) in ch-2 sp rep from ** across through ch-2 sp just before next corner, ch2, 1sc between 2-dc pairs, ch2, 2dccl in corner sp, rep from * 3 times omitting final 2dccl, ss in beg 2dccl.

Rnd 5 * (1sc in ch-2 sp, ch3) 4 times, ** 1sc in next 2 ch-sps, (ch3, 1sc in next ch-2 sp) 2 times, ch3, 1sc in next 2 ch-sps, ch3, 1sc in next ch-sp, ch3, rep from ** across side ending with 1sc in 2 ch-sps just before first 2dccl of corner, ch3, rep from * 3 times, ss in first sc.
