Introduction

Hello, gorgeous crafter! Today I am shouting out the announcement for my Dutch Rose Blanket CAL Reboot! In 2018, I designed Dutch Rose, and it became one of my favorite designs I ever created. So many of you loved it that I decided to host a Crochet-Along and it was a hit!

In the wake of the 2022 VVCAL, I thought it might be neat to keep the CAL ball rolling and host a reboot of the Dutch Rose Blanket CAL. Now folks who missed out on the first one can participate, or folks who just want to make the coziest blanket ever can join along.

PDF Version

The Dutch Rose Blanket PDF is available to purchase from Etsy and Ravelry. During this CAL, I will be updating the pattern for clarity and making a few construction changes, but the way the blanket turns out will be just the same as in the current PDF. Once the CAL is about halfway through, I will update the PDF with the clarified version.

This page will be updated with new information every Wednesday from now until the CAL is over on October 26th. The CAL is only 8 weeks long, so it’s perfect for the in-between time from now until deep Fall!

Here’s what to expect during the CAL:

  • The Dutch Rose Blanket CAL will begin September 7th and run through October 26th. It is a small CAL with only 8 weeks.
  • Look for CAL posts here on this website (CypressTextiles.net) each Wednesday during the CAL.
  • The patterns are in US Terms and UK Terms, written, chart, and video instruction form, as well as step by step photos.
  • Every Wednesday during the CAL, I will release the new instruction, and we will make them, join them, and add a zero-waste border at the end!

Introduction to the Pattern

We will be working all of the full rose hexagons during the first three weeks, and joining them as we go with single crochet PLT. The joining method will be thoroughly explained, but many of you will have worked this join before, in Geometric Lace and many of my other blanket designs.

The full striped hexagons, and half rose and striped hexagons will be worked in the next three weeks, then we have two weeks to work the striped corner, and the border will be added in the final week.

This blanket design is inspired by fabric quilt top makers who use different patterns (spots, stripes, plaids, etc) to create a cozy visual. I basically set out to design the coziest blanket humanly possible. Stone Washed is a very cozy yarn, with a mottled fuzzy look, and the frills of the rose hexagons, mixed with the striped hexagons adds more coze factor. The striped corner and ruffled border ramp up the cozy to eleven, and it’s really not possible to get any cozier of a blanket.

Some of you will think the striped corner is no fun, and you will want to omit it. That’s fine! A guide to do this is below in the Create your own layout section.

Getting Gauge

The full motifs measure 7.5in at the widest point, before blocking. You should match this gauge with whatever hook is necessary to do so (I used a 3.75mm) and that will ensure you have enough yarn.

When it is time to add the striped corner, I will address the gauge for that. In the first run of this CAL, in 2018, some folks had a hard time getting the corner to work out, and this is due 100% to the gauge, specifically the height of the dc (UK tr) stitches. I will really discuss this deeply so that everyone has a good time. 🙂

Create Your Own Layout/Size

For this to work, you need to follow the guide below. Start with hexagon graph paper or a layout of hexagons printed from the internet, and I will show you what layout won’t work and what layout will work.

Below is a layout example. The striped corner can not end by cutting into a motif. As shown below in the red circle, the line for the striped corner is located at a point where a half hexagon is cut. The green line below will work as it does not cut into any motifs. This will change the blanket size of course, so if you choose your own adventure, and you want to keep the striped corner, you have to play around with the layout to make the blanket wider or taller.

Omitting the striped corner

Easy peasy! Refer to the large or small layouts to see that the top and bottom rows of hexagons need to start and end with a half-hexagon motif. Once you have that in place, your blanket can be as large or small as you’d like.
