Pattern includes instructions for a square motif blanket and a hexagon motif blanket. The borders are suggestions so you can get any desired look.

Repeat and Bracket Guide
Square brackets [ ] are used for small repeats: 4dc, [2dc, 3tr, 2dc] 2 times
Asterisks *are used for repeats that include small repeats: *5dc, [1ch, 1dc] 3 times in next ch, rep from * 3 times
Round brackets ( ) are used when a string of stitches are worked into the same spot: (3tr, 3ch, 3tr) in next st
Stitch Counts are given at the end of rows where necessary, in the following format: [12 dc, 3 sp]
Tips and Notes
- Weave your ends after each time you cut the yarn to avoid having to do them all at the end.
- Please read the stitch guide for any abbreviations.
- To get a neater result, I do not “chain up” for the first sc of the round/row. Jump straight into the first sc.

The PDF version of this pattern is available on Etsy and Ravelry and in my shop, and both US and UK Terms PDFs are included in the purchase.

Square Motif Blanket
Join As-You-Go (PLT Join)
Rnd 5, all motifs With new yarn ss in final dc, beg dtr in same st, [1dtr in same st, 2dtr in next st, 1dtr, 2tr, 1htr, 5dc, 1htr, 2tr, 2dtr] 4 times omitting final dtr on fourth rep, ss in beg dtr. [24 dtr, 16 tr, 8 htr, 20 dc]

–
Rnd 6, first motif of top row (top left) Beg dtr in next st, [ch3, (1dtr, 1tr) in next st, 15tr, (1tr, 1dtr) in next st] 4 times omitting final st on fourth rep, ss in beg dtr, cut yarn. [8 dtr, 68 tr, 4 ch-sp]
Rnd 6, remaining motifs in top row Beg dtr in next st, ch3, (1dtr, 1tr) in next st, 15tr, (1tr, 1dtr) in next st, ch1, PLT in corresponding adjacent ch-sp, ch2, (1dtr, 1tr) in next st, 3tr, [PLT, 1tr] 10 times, 2tr, [(1tr, 1dtr) in next st, ch3, (1dtr, 1tr) in next st, 15tr] 2 times, 1tr in next st, ss in beg dtr, cut yarn. [8 dtr, 68 tr, 4 ch-sp]

–

–
Rnd 6, first square of second row Beg dtr in next st, ch3, (1dtr, 1tr) in next st, 15tr, (1tr, 1dtr) in next st, ch1, PLT in diagonal corner ch-sp, ch2, (1dtr, 1tr) in next st, 3tr, [PLT, 1tr] 10 times, 2tr, (1tr, 1dtr) in next st, ch1, PLT in adjacent corner ch-sp, ch2, [(1dtr, 1tr) in next st, 15tr, (1tr, 1dtr) in next st, ch3] 2 times omitting final dtr and ch3, ss in beg dtr, cut yarn. [8 dtr, 68 tr, 4 ch-sp]
Rnd 6, All other motifs on Row 2, 3, and so on up to bottom row Work first side same as side 1 of first motif in this row. When you work the second corner, grab that unworked diagonal or adjacent corner from before (Photo #1 below). Work another side, making PLT as normal, (Photo #2 below), join the adjacent corner if you are on the perimeter, continue as normal around the square to complete it just like the first square in this Row. When you are on the final square in the Row, your first corner will grab the adjacent corner because that corner is on the perimeter of your blanket.

–

–

–
Rnd 6, Final row on your piece (bottom row) Work first square as in previous Rows. Work second square as in previous Rows, but the third corner will grab the adjacent corner ch-sp because that corner is on the perimeter of your blanket (Photo #3 below).
When your final square is complete and joined, you will see that all corner ch-sps in the entire blanket have been picked up. Skip the hexagon blanket version, and head to the Blanket Border section.

Hexagon Motif Blanket
Join As-You-Go (PLT Join)
Rnd 5, all motifs With next color, ss in final st of Rnd 4, beg dtr, [ch1, 2dtr in next st, 8tr, 2dtr in next st] 6 times omitting final dtr on sixth rep, ss in beg dtr.

–
Rnd 6, First motif [3dc in corner ch-sp, 12dc] 6 times, ss in first dc, cut yarn.
Rnd 6, All other motifs Work as for first motif, until 2 sides of Rnd 6 plus 2dc of third corner are complete (Photo #2 below). Line up your first motif with your second motif along the adjacent sides, making sure the circles are oriented correctly (Photo #2 below), work as normal, but after every dc, make PLT in the corresponding adjacent stitch on the completed motif, 1dc in fourth corner ch-sp, PLT, 2dc in same sp, and work remaining sides as normal (Photo #3 below shows this in process.)

–

–
Joining 1 motif to 2 already joined motifs
Work in the same manner, using the same joining method. Figure out which sides will be adjacent, and work the PLT join on them. When joining three corners together, work your 3dc as in photos below: Photo #1: 1dc, PLT on lower right hex. Photo #2: 1dc, PLT on center dc of above hex. Photo #3: 1dc, PLT corresponding st on above hex. Continue as normal.

[4 dc, 3 htr, 3 tr, 3 hdtr, 10 dtr]

–
Row 6 With next color, ss in first st, 1dc in same st, PLT in center dc of adjacent corner, [1dc, PLT] across to next corner and join 2 rem sides as for previous full hexagons, when the end of the row is reached, cut yarn.
Note: At first and final column, where half hexagons are not surrounded on three sides, work first side or final side plain without joining.

–
Complete Blanket Body
Work your blanket in staggered rows of hexagons starting with a row with half hexagons at either end (example: 6 hexes, 7 hexes, 6 hexes, and so on). Once your half-hexagons are joined in, you can fill in your zig-zag sides in your preferred way, to square off your blanket so that you are ready to add a border.
–
Blanket Border
To work any border, first work a full dc round on your square or rectangle blanket as follows: [3dc in corner st, 1dc evenly across to next corner] 4 times, ss in first dc.
I give 3 small border suggestions below.

–
Reverse Single Crochet
The best way to learn technique this is to watch a video. I learned it from CrochetCabana.com! Reverse dc in all sts around. Do not work any extra sts in the corners as they look great when slightly rounded.

–
Spaced Picot
Make Picot: 1dc, ch3, 1dc in side of prev dc to close picot.
Starting in any corner, picot in all 3 sts, [3dc, picot] across to next corner, 3dc, picot in all 3 corner sts, and rep around all 4 sides, ss in first dc, cut yarn.

–
Lace Scallop – Photo #3 above
Make Picot: Ch3, 1dc in upper left side of dtr.
Make Scallop: In indicated ch sp: (1dtr, picot) 5 times, 1dtr.
Rnd 1 Starting 3 sts before any corner, [1dc, ch2, sk1] around blanket, ss in first dc.
Rnd 2 1dc in ch-sp, * [1dtr in center dc of corner, picot] 6 times, 1dtr in same st, sk 1 ch-sp, [1dc in next ch-sp, make Scallop in next ch-sp, sk 1 ch-sp], rep from * 3 times until beginning is reached, ss in first dc, cut yarn.

–
Finishing
Weave all remaining ends, and block blanket if desired to open up lace.
Yay! All done! Give yourself a fist bump!
