Instructions

Candy Puffs is a whimsical and dainty circle-to-square pattern with a gorgeous diagonal twist! Make 41 full circles, 16 half circles, and 4 quarter circles, and join the pieces using a very opulent join as-you-go. Once all of the pieces are joined, a pretty and delicate puff lace edging finishes the blanket.

Color Placement

This blanket is made for stash busting, but I used 4 shades of blue and 4 shades of pink for my sample. I made an even amount of each motif with all of the colors, and then made the contrasting third round evenly spread as well. Then, for the color placement, I randomly placed the motifs. This made for the lovely shading effect that you see in the finished blanket photos. I do not have an exact color layout for this blanket sample. It will look darling in any colors!

Full Circle (Make 41)

Rnd 1 Using first color, MR, beg puff, ch1, (puff, ch1) 7 times, join to closing chain of beg puff. [8 puff, 8 sp]

Rnd 2 (Beg dc, 3dc) in first ch-sp, 4dc in all ch-sps around, ss in beg dc, cut yarn and weave ends. [32 dc]

Rnd 3 Join second color with ss in second st of Rnd 2, (beg dc, 1dc) in same st, * [1dc, 2dc in next st] 2 times, ch1, sk1, (puff, ch1, puff) in next st, sk1, 2dc in next st, rep from * 3 times omitting final 2dc, ss in beg dc, cut yarn and weave ends. [8 puff, 32 dc, 12 sp]

Half Circle (Make 16)

Row 1 (WS) Using first color, MR, beg puff, (ch1, puff) 4 times, turn. [5 puff, 4 sp]

Row 2 (Beg dc, 3dc) in first ch-sp, 4dc in 3 ch-sps, 1dc in same sp as previous, cut yarn and weave ends. [17 dc]

Row 3 With RS still facing, join second color with ss in beg dc, beg puff in same st, * [2dc in next st, 1dc] 2 times, 2dc in next st, ch1, * sk1, (puff, ch1, puff) in next st, sk1, rep from * to * 1 time, puff in final st, cut yarn and weave ends. [4 puff, 16 dc, 5 sp]

Quarter Circle (Make 4)

Row 1 (WS) Using first color, 3sc, [ch1, puff] 3 times, turn. [3 puff, 3 sp, 3 sc]

Note: Second sc will be the corner of the blanket body. This is helpful when working the border.

Row 2 (Beg dc, 3dc) in first ch-sp, 5dc in next ch-sp, cut yarn and weave ends. [9 dc]

Row 3 With RS still facing, join second color with ss in beg dc, beg puff in same st, [2dc in next st, 1dc] 2 times, 2dc in next st, ch1, sk1, puff in final st, cut yarn and weave ends. [2 puff, 8 dc]

Remaining Full Circle Motifs

Using these methods, join remaining motifs numbered 15-41.

Note: Here is how the join will look when 4 motif corners come together. To avoid a hole where these 4 corners meet, you should capture the cross join when adding in the 4th motif. This will be when the “North” corner of a motif joins to the motif located directly above it. Capture the cross join by putting your hook under it when you grab the lp to PLT. It will then be encased in the PLT joining chain and there will not be a hole.

Join in Quarter Circle Motifs

Note: Joining method is the same for all 4 quarter circle motifs. These motifs are joined onto the 4 corners of the blanket. Use layout as a guide.

Row 4 With WS facing, join Yarn A with ss in first puff, (beg tr, ch3, 1tr) in same st, 1dc in next ch-sp, 1dc in next st, 1hdc, 4sc, 1hdc, 1dc, 1dc in next ch-sp, (1tr, ch3, 1tr) in final puff, turn. [4 tr, 4 dc, 2 hdc, 4 sc, 2 sp]

Row 5 Beg tr in first st, ch3, (puff, ch1, puff) in first ch-sp, sk2, (1dc, PLT) 8 time, ch1, (puff, ch1, puff) in final ch-sp, ch3, 1tr in final st, cut yarn and weave ends.

Join in Half Circle Motifs

Note: Join in Half Circle Motifs 1 blanket edge at a time, join 4 motifs on from left to right. Each side’s 4 motifs will be joined in the same manner. When all 16 half circle motifs are joined on, there should be no more unjoined corner lps on any motifs.
