Hey, you! There’s a new project on my hook, as I’ve been gifted Scheepjes Mighty – a brand new yarn for me to work with and try out. I have been on a roll this year with the projects.
You may know I took a lot of breaks last year, but when 2020 hit I made a big list of all the things I want to finish this year and wouldn’t you know, there were 20 of them! So here’s to finishing 20 in 2020! I can cross off one of them when this quick little project is complete.
Let me tell you a bit about Mighty – available at WoolWarehouse*, and then I’ll show you a sneak peek of my new WIP.
Introducing Scheepjes Mighty!
Today I’m sharing with you the Jute and Cotton blend powerhouse of the century. Seriously this yarn is perfect for any rugged project that must be made in strong and durable yarn. You could make baskets, macrame, stuffed toys, trivets, place-mats, shopping bags, and more. Available here!*
So what is Jute?
I did not even know what Jute was, and nobody that I showed Mighty to knew what it was either. But I have to say, after doing some research, it sounds like an environmentally friendly fiber.
From the Scheepjes Website:
This natural, wastewater created and plant-based yarn fuses the extreme durability, tensile strength and sturdiness of Jute fibre with the softness of Cotton, allowing you to make usable accessories, such as handbags and homeware items, that will withstand frequent use and last a lifetime.
From Wikipedia:
Jute has many advantages as a home textile, either replacing cotton or blending with it. It is a strong, durable, color and light-fast fiber. Its UV protection, sound and heat insulation, low thermal conduction and anti-static properties make it a wise choice in home décor. Also, fabrics made of jute fibers are carbon-dioxide neutral and naturally decomposable. These properties are also why jute can be used in high performance technical textiles.
Moreover, jute can be grown in 4–6 months with a huge amount of cellulose being produced from the jute hurd (inner woody core or parenchyma of the jute stem) that can meet most of the wood needs of the world. Jute is the major crop among others that is able to protect deforestation by industrialization.
Thus, jute is the most environment-friendly fiber starting from the seed to expired fiber, as the expired fibers can be recycled more than once.
From Future Fibres:
Known as the ‘golden fibre’ jute is one of the longest and most used natural fibre for various textile applications. Jute fibre is 100% bio-degradable and recyclable and thus environmentally friendly. A hectare of jute plants consumes about 15 tonnes of carbon dioxide and releases 11 tonnes of oxygen. Cultivating jute in crop rotations enriches the fertility of the soil for the next crop. Jute also does not generate toxic gases when burnt.

Mighty Color Range
And finally, here is the breakdown of the color range for Scheepjes Mighty Yarn. There are 6 lovely solid neutrals, 3 two-tone twisted blends, and 2 indigo shades. So pretty!
I took a closer pic of the two-toned shades that I have, and they are lovely! Reminiscent of twine, but this yarn is so much more than just twine. It has a really special quality when worked up.
And here are the two solid color tones that I have. I also have a grey solid tone, but I have used it all up in my project WIP!
A Mighty Work in Progress
Here’s the sneak peek of what I decided to make with this yarn! I used all of the grey ball in this portion of the piece. I asked around what everyone thought it was, and lots of folks said blanket or shawl, since wow I am really just a one-trick pony, and very predictable. BUT – drum roll please – this is a bag! Yaasssss!
Whoop whoop! Another peek at the bag in progress… I absolutely cannot wait to share more of this with you. Look for more progress pics coming soon.
Thanks for checking out my yarny review!
As always, happy crafting to you,
Rachele C.
