Free Crochet Pattern: Lacy Hexagon Blanket (US Terms)

Hello, gorgeous crafter! I have a special free pattern for you today: the Lacy Hexagons Blanket! Some crafters in my community have already gotten their hands on the PDF version of this pattern, since I released it along with the FO reveal last week. Today, I’m releasing the free version! Scroll down for US Terms, or click here for UK Terms.

PDF Version

Find this pattern in a condensed ad-free PDF for a small fee in my Etsy Shop and on RavelryPattern PDFs for US and UK Terms are both included in the purchase. Help support my work by purchasing this convenient PDF if you like, but just being here on the website is plenty of support as well. 🙂

Designing the Lacy Hexagons Blanket

Lacy Hexagons Blanket was developed from a traditional crochet pattern that I found in 2014 and adapted to create a blanket for fun. Over the years, folks asked me for that pattern, and I pointed them to my source, but as the years went on, that website no longer existed, and I had folks again asking for the pattern.

Lately, I have been diving into my vault of crochet blanket pattern ideas that never came to fruition, and Lacy Hexagons is one of them. I decided to go ahead and move forward with it! Soon, I will be releasing a Creative Art Blanket Online Course, and many of the techniques that I use for creating a blanket layout were used for Lacy Hexagons. It was a delight to be able to create this blanket and my class at the same time, and apply my techniques to the blanket as I designed it.

I cannot wait to release this course in November! For now, the blanket layout is “random” so you will have to wait to learn my color placement tips and tricks, I’m afraid 🙂 Don’t worry though, Our Tribe yarn is fantastic for this project and will make your project sing, no matter the layout.

Our Tribe Yarn

I used Scheepjes Our Tribe yarn in 8 shades for this project. If you want to see more about the design and color choice, click the FO Reveal post here!

The 8 shades of Our Tribe are:

  • 965 Felted Button
  • 977 A Spoonful of Yarn
  • 974 The Curio Crafts Room
  • 970 CypressTextiles
  • 971 Jellina Creations
  • 963 Haak Maar Raak
  • 951 50 Shades of 4ply
  • 962 Marie

Color Placement for Each Motif

When I worked up this blanket, I joined the hexagons as-you-go, just like described in the pattern, but I did not join them in exact rows. Instead, I purposely wrote the join so that you can join them together at any point of the blanket. You can skip around the blanket and join the hexagons, so that you can manipulate the layout and put any color placement that you prefer.

If this is too daunting, you can always work a hexie complete, then back out the final round and wrap the joining round yarn around the motif, counting the number of wraps, adding a couple of wraps to that number just to be safe. Then before you get to the final round, you can wrap the yarn that number of times, with the same tension as before, so you can place the hexagons before you join them, and figure out your layout.

The Lacy Hexagons Crochet Blanket free pattern is ready for you all, and I really hope you have a wonderful time creating her. Any color combination will look stunning, and if you do decide to make her, be sure to hashtag #LacyHexagonsBlanket and #CypressTextiles – this way I can see your works 🙂

Notions

US Size 3mm or 3.5mm hook, whichever will help you achieve gauge. Note: I used 3.5, but others have told me they get gauge with 3mm, so try 3mm first as I tend to crochet a bit tight.

Gauge

Motif measures 6in at widest point, unblocked

Measurements

Finished piece measures about 57x57in after blocking, and 55x55in before blocking, and is easily resized by using larger gauge yarn and hook, or by making more motifs.

Repeat and Bracket Guide

Square brackets [ ] are used for small repeats: 4dc, [2dc, 3tr, 2dc] 2 times

Asterisks *are used for repeats that include small repeats: *5dc, [ch1, 1dc] 3 times in next ch, rep from * 3 times

Round brackets ( ) are used when a string of stitches are worked into the same spot: (3tr, 3ch, 3tr) in next st

Tips and Notes

  • Weave your ends after each time you cut the yarn to avoid having to do them all at the end.
  • Please read the stitch guide for any abbreviations.
  • To get a neater result, I do not “chain up” for the first sc of the round/row. Jump straight into the first sc.
  • Read carefully through the entire pattern before beginning.
  • “Ss in 1 ch” or “Ss in 2 chs” means to slip stitch into that number of chains of the first chain space.

Instructions

This blanket is created by making each motif and joining it onto the blanket body as you go. Each piece will be joined immediately to the blanket. To take your WIP with you on the go, stop before the joining round and join at home. The color layout is randomized, and you can use your creativity to make any layout you wish.

Motif Color Distribution:

Note: The motifs are joined as you go, but you should keep a tally of how many motifs you make of each color, according to the numbers below.

There are 104 Full Hexagons, and 12 half hexagons.

965, 977, 974, 970, 971, 963: Make 13 Full Hexagons and 2 Half Hexagons

951, 962: Make 13 Full Hexagons

First Full Hexagon

Note: This is the first motif at the top left of the blanket.

Rnd 1 MR, beg dc, [1dc, ch1, 1dc] 6 times omitting the final dc, ss in beg dc. [12 dc, 6 sp]

Rnd 2 Beg dc in same st as ss, [1dc in same st, 2dc in next st, ch2, 1dc in next st] 6 times omitting final dc, ss in beg dc. [24 dc, 6 sp]

Rnd 3 Beg dc in same st as ss, [1dc in same st, 2dc, 2dc in next st, ch2, 1dc in next st] 6 times omitting final dc, ss in beg dc. [36 dc, 6 sp]

Rnd 4 Beg dc in same st as ss, [1dc in same st, 4dc, 2dc in next st, ch2, 1dc in next st] 6 times omitting final dc, ss in beg dc. [48 dc, 6 sp]

Rnd 5 Beg dc in same st as ss, [7dc, ch3, 1sc in next ch-sp, ch3, 1dc in next st] 6 times omitting final dc, ss in beg dc. [48 dc, 6 sc, 12 sp]

Rnd 6 Beg dc in next st, * 5dc, [ch3, 1sc in next ch-sp] 2 times, ch3, sk 1 dc, 1dc in next st, rep from * 5 times omitting final dc, ss in beg dc. [36 dc, 12 sc, 18 sp]

Rnd 7 Beg dc in next st, * 3dc, [ch3, 1sc in next ch-sp] 3 times, ch3, sk 1 dc, 1dc in next st, rep from * 5 times omitting final dc, ss in beg dc. [24 dc, 18 sc, 24 sp]

Rnd 8 Ss in next st, beg dc in between this st and next st, * ch1, 1dc in same spot between those 2 sts, [ch3, 1sc in next ch-sp] 4 times, ch3, 1dc between second and third dc of 4-dc group, rep from * 5 times omitting final dc, ss in beg dc, cut yarn and weave ends. [12 dc, 24 sc, 36 sp]

Remaining Full Hexagons of Top Row

Rnds 1-7 Work as for First Full Hexagon.

Rnd 8 (Joining Round) With RS still facing, work 1 side just as for First Full Hexagon, up to second ch-1 sp – do not work the second ch-1 sp, remove the working lp from the hook, insert the hook front to back through the adjacent ch-1 sp on the side that you are joining to, grab the lp, pull the lp through to the front of the work (PLT maneuver made), ch1, 1dc between stitches as before, [ch1, PLT in corresponding adjacent ch-sp, ch2, 1sc in next ch-sp] 4 times, ch1, PLT, ch2, 1dc between 2nd and 3rd dc sts of 4-dc group as before, PLT, ch1, 1dc as before, work remaining sides plain, cut yarn and weave ends.

Subsequent Hexagons

Join in rows using layout as a guide. The only difference for the subsequent full hexagons is that you will encounter corners where 1 corner is joined to 2 previously joined corners. When you find this, as you remove the lp from the hook, and you are about to insert the hook through the corresponding ch-1 corner sp, instead you are going to insert the hook from front to back through the ch-1 corner sp of the motif to the left, and back to front through the ch-1 corner sp of the motif to the right, then grab the lp and PLT through both corners, then ch2, and continue joining the next side, until all of the sides that need to be joined are completed, then finish the remaining sides plain without joining, and ss in the beg dc, and cut yarn.

Half Hexagon

Note: As shown in the Schematic, there are 12 half hexagons, and all of them will be joined on the final row, either on 2 sides or on 3 sides.

Row 1 (WS) MR, beg dc, 1dc, [ch1, 2dc] 3 times, turn. [8 dc, 3 sp]

Row 2 Beg dc, 2dc in next st, [ch2, 2dc in next 2 sts] 3 times omitting final dc, turn. [14 dc, 3 sp]

Row 3 Beg dc, 1dc, 2dc in next st, [ch2, 2dc in next st, 2dc, 2dc in next st] 3 times omitting final 2dc, turn. [20 dc, 3 sp]

Row 4 Beg dc, 2dc, 2dc in next st, [ch2, 2dc in next st, 4dc, 2dc in next st] 3 times omitting final 3 dc, turn. [26 dc, 3 sp]

Row 5 Beg dc, 4dc, [ch3, 1sc in next ch-sp, ch3, 8dc] 3 times omitting final 3dc, turn. [26 dc, 3 sc, 6 sp]

Row 6 Beg dc, 3dc, * [ch3, 1sc in next ch-sp] 2 times, ch3, sk 1 dc, 6dc, rep from * 2 times omitting final 2dc, turn. [20 dc, 6 sc, 9 sp]

Row 7 Beg dc, 2dc, * [ch3, 1sc in next ch-sp] 3 times, ch3, sk 1 dc, 4dc, rep from * 2 times omitting final dc, turn. [14 dc, 9 sc, 12 sp]

Row 8 (Joining Row) (RS)

Note: Look at the Schematic to see if you will be joining 2 or 3 sides of the half hexagon, and follow the guide below.

Joining first and second sides: Beg dc between first and second sts, PLT in corresponding corner ch-1 sp, ch1, 1dc between same sts, join side, corner, and side as for Full Hexagons, work third side plain without joining, making final dc, ch1, dc between next-to-final and final sts, cut yarn and weave ends.

Joining all 3 sides: Beg dc between first and second sts, PLT in corresponding corner ch-1 sp, ch1, 1dc between same sts, join side, corner, side, corner, and side as for Full Hexagons, making final dc, PLT, ch1, dc between next-to-final and final sts, cut yarn and weave ends.

Joining second and third sides: Work first side plain without joining, join corner, side, corner and side as for Full Hexagons, making final dc, PLT, ch1, dc between next-to-final and final sts, cut yarn and weave ends.

Here are some progress pics!

Fill in Zig-Zag Triangles at Top and Bottom Edges

Note: Each Triangle gap is filled in individually, and then yarn is cut and weaved in.

Row 1 With RS facing and using yarn remnants from one of the colors, join yarn with ss in ch-1 corner sp at right-hand side of triangle gap, 1sc in same sp, [ch3, 1sc in next ch-3 sp] 5 times, ch3, sk ch-1 sp, [1sc in next ch-3 sp, ch3] 5 times, 1sc in ch-1 sp, turn. [12 sc, 11 sp]

Row 2 Ss in 1ch, 1sc in same sp, [ch3, 1sc in next ch-3 sp] 4 times, ch3, sk 1 sp, [1sc in next ch-3 sp, ch3] 4 times, 1sc in next sp, turn. [10 sc, 9 sp]

Row 3 Ss in 1ch, 1sc in same sp, [ch3, 1sc in next ch-3 sp] 3 times, ch3, sk 1 sp, [1sc in next ch-3 sp, ch3] 3 times, 1sc in next sp, turn. [8 sc, 7 sp]

Row 4 Ss in 1ch, 1sc in same sp, [ch3, 1sc in next ch-3 sp] 2 times, ch3, sk 1 sp, [1sc in next ch-3 sp, ch3] 2 times, 1sc in next sp, turn. [6 sc, 5 sp]

Row 5 Ss in 1ch, 1sc in same sp, [ch3, 1sc in next ch-3 sp] 1 time, ch3, sk 1 sp, [1sc in next ch-3 sp, ch3] 1 time, 1sc in next sp, turn. [4 sc, 3 sp]

Row 6 Ss in 1ch, 1sc in same sp, ch3, sk 1 sp, 1sc in next sp, cut yarn and weave ends. [2 sc, 1 sp]

Fill rem 9 triangle gaps on this side, then fill 10 triangle gaps on opposing side.

All 4 sides of the blanket are now straightened. Proceed to blanket border.

Blanket Border

Note: Blanket border uses remnants of yarn balls, using them up in any order you please, as this is a zero-waste border. As colors are used up, join in next color yarn and continue with border instruction.

Rnd 1 With size 3mm hook, join first yarn color with ss in corner ch-1 sp at top right corner of blanket, * (1sc, ch3, 1sc) in same corner sp, [ch3, 1sc in next ch-sp] across top edge of blanket until next corner ch-1 sp is reached, ch3, (1sc, ch3, 1sc) in corner ch-1 sp, [ch3, 1sc around next dc st treating it as a ch-sp] across side until next corner ch-1 sp is reached, ch3, rep from * 1 time, ss in first sc. Note: Make sure opposing sides have the same number of ch-sps.

Rnd 2 Ss in 1 ch, beg dc in same ch-sp, * ch3, 2dc in same corner ch-sp, [ch1, 2dc in next ch-sp] across side until next corner sp is reached, ch1, 2dc in corner sp, rep from * 3 times omitting final dc, ss in beg dc.

Rnd 3 Ss in 1 ch, * (1sc, ch1, 1sc) in same corner sp, [ch3, 1sc in next ch-sp] across to next corner sp, ch3, rep from * 3 times, ss in first sc.

Rnd 4 Rep Rnd 2.

Rnds 5-7 Rep Rnds 3, 2, and 3 again.

Rnd 8 (1sc, ch2, 1sc) in every ch-sp around, ss in first sc, cut yarn and weave ends.

To finish blanket, weave any remaining ends, and block blanket to open up the lace if desired.

Blanket is complete! Yay – Give yourself a fist bump!
