Hello, fabulous crafter! In an effort to provide a free version of all of my (60-ish!) self-published full blanket patterns, I am striving to release a free pattern weekly. Side note: There are about 30 more blankets I have designed which are not self-published, so I can’t release freebies of those, but I wish I could!
Tiny Garden Blanket
A few years back, I became obsessed with the creative endeavors of a talented and lovely lady named Jessica Wilkinson. She has since left social media, but her nature flatlays and video trips around her garden were absolutely inspiring to me. I designed five blankets inspired by her drawings, her flatlays, and her tiny porch potted plant garden.
The materials for Jessica’s floral photography come from a few modest potted plants on her patio. From that tiny garden come the gorgeous and colorful flatlays that inspired this blanket.
Below, you will find the free US Terms pattern, and you can find the UK Terms version here!
There is a yarn kit available for Tiny Garden – Find it here! (affiliate)

Instructions
Make all full hexagon motifs and join them together using my Continuous SC PLT Join for Hexagons (video here!) and then make and join in all half motifs. Work to fill the triangle gaps on the sides of the blanket, and add the simple but super-cute border.

Join Full Hexagon Motifs
Experienced crochet artists may use any preferred joining method. Beginners, head to my blog post to find the free joining tutorial for this piece (including lots of details and even videos)!
“CJAYG for Hexagons using SC and PLT Join”
Here are a few photos from the joining process – you don’t need stitch markers, and the join seems tough, but it is a time-saver as you only have 2 ends to weave when you’re done.
Alternatively, you can make an sc border with 3sc in each corner on the full motifs, and add another row to the half motifs, and then slip stitch them all together. You can use virtually any join you prefer!
Join Half Hexagon Motifs 1 and 2
(Refer to color placement schematic for half motif numbers.)
Holding Half Hexagon motif with RS facing, join yarn A with ss in first st of Row 6, 2 sc in same st, sc in all sts to corner st, 2 sc in corner st, PLT (release lp from hook, insert hook front to back through corresponding st on completed motif, grab lp, pull lp through to front of work), sc in same corner st, PLT, (sc, PLT) across side to corner st, (sc, PLT) 3 times in corner st, join third side across, (sc, PLT) 2 times in final st of Row 6, cut yarn.
Join Half Hexagon Motifs 3 and 4
With RS facing, join yarn A with ss in first st of Row 6, (sc, PLT) 2 times in same st, (sc, PLT) across side to corner st, (sc, PLT) 3 times in corner st, join second side across, (sc, PLT) 2 times in corner st, sc in same corner st, sc in all sts across to final st, 2 sc in final st of Row 6, cut yarn.
All Remaining Half Motifs
With RS facing, join yarn A with ss in first st of Row 6, (sc, PLT) 2 times in same st, (sc, PLT) across side to corner st, (sc, PLT) 3 times in corner st, join second side across, (sc, PLT) 3 times in corner st, join third side across to final st, (sc, PLT) 2 times in final st of Row 6, cut yarn.
Fill Side Triangle Gaps
Turn piece to zig-zag side and begin at right hand corner.
Row 1 Join Yarn B with ss in corner sc of left-hand motif, sk 1, sc, hdc, dc in 10 sts, sk corner sts on both motifs, dc in 10 sts, hdc, sc, turn.
Row 2 Sk 1, ss, sc in 2 sts, hdc in 2 sts, dc in 5 sts, sk 2, dc in 5 sts, hdc in 2 sts, sc in 2 sts, cut yarn.
Repeat for remaining 15 side triangle gaps.
Border
Rnd 1 Join Yarn B with ss in upper right corner st of blanket, * 3 sc in corner, sc in all sts evenly across to next corner st, rep from * 3 times, ss in first sc. Make sure to place the same number of sc on opposing sides of the blanket.
Rnd 2 * (Sc, ch 2, sc) in corner st, (ch 2, sk 1, sc) across side to one st before next corner st, ch 2, rep from * 3 times, ss in first sc.
Rnd 3 * 3 sc in corner ch-sp, 2 sc in sll ch sps across to next corner, rep from * 3 times, ss in first sc., turn work.
Rnd 4 (sc, tr) – not in the same st – around entire piece, working from the WS so that the tr sts form mini “bobbles” on the RS of the piece, ss in first sc, cut yarn.
