Introduction

Each of the VVCAL 2018 Squares were dedicated to a tree by one of the members of my CypressTextiles Tree Huggers Facebook group.

The Australian Gum Square was named by Lea Beaumont. Thank you.

Written Instruction

Rnd 1 MR, beg dc, 15 dc, ss in beg dc. [16 dc]

Rnd 2 (Sc, tr) in 16 sts, making sure to keep the tr “bobbles” at the front of the work. If this is too difficult, simply turn your motif to the WS and work this round on the WS instead. Then your tr sts will naturally “bobble” on the RS of the work. If you do this, don’t forget to turn the motif back to the RS for the next round. Ss in first sc. [16 tr, 16 sc]

Rnd 3 Ss in next st, beg 2trcl in sc, (ch2, 2trcl in next sc) 16 times, ch2, ss in beg 2trcl. [16 2trcl, 16 sp]

Rnd 4 5sc in all sps around, ss in first sc. [80 sc]

Rnd 5 Ss in next st, (sc in next st, ch4, sk4) 16 times, ss in first sc. [16 sc, 16 sp]

Note: Alternatively, Rnd 5 can be worked as follows for a more well-behaved square in the end.

Rnd 5 Ss in next st, * (sc in next st, ch3, sk4) 3 times, sc in next st, ch4, sk4, rep from * 3 times, ss in first sc. [16 sc, 16 sp]

Rnd 6 * 5sc in 3 sps, (2dc, ch3, 2dc) in next sp, rep from * 3 times, ss in first sc. [16 dc, 60 sc, 4 sp]

Rnd 7 (Sc in all sts to corner sp, 3sc in corner sp) 4 times, sc in all sts to beg, ss in first sc, cut yarn. [88 sc]
