Crochet Secrets

Chevron 2.0 Crochet Blanket Pattern Made with Yarn Doubled or Not?

Through all of the Chevron blankets I have made, I always get questions about the thickness of my work, and if I use two strands of yarn. With adjustments to the original standard-thickness pattern, you can make a plush chevron piece for a drafty nursery or chilly workspace.

The original Chevron2.0 pattern calls for one strand of worsted weight yarn and a size K (6.5mm) hook. Fun fact: the beauty of crochet blankets is that any gauge will work! Yay! You can use any weight yarn that you love and the best hook that goes with it. You may have to create a larger or smaller design, which is why I usually make my crochet patterns (Ravelry) easily adjustable.

Here are some Q & A!

What size hook should I use when doubling yarn?

  • When you have an order for an extra thick piece, use two strands of worsted weight and a size N (10mm) hook
  • however, if you are using DK weight yarn like StyleCraft Special DK (WoolWarehouse Affiliate), use a size L (8mm) hook.
  • With some extra thick yarn weights, an even larger hook (Amazon Affiliate) will still work (look at arm knitting, after all! – Expert Flax and Twine).
  • A size K (6.5mm) hook should work for doubling sport weight like KnitPicks Brava Sport (Affiliate).

Can I morph any blanket pattern to be extra thick?

Not all patterns translate well to this thick gauge. My Chevron2.0, Gumball, and Bold Stripe blanket designs all work very well with thick gauge.

Is the finished extra-thick blanket too heavy?

It is a good idea to keep the blanket under 48×48 inches to keep it light enough for a mobile blanket. Any bigger than that and I would recommend keeping the piece in a stationary place, such as on a bed or on the back of a couch.

Side by Side Test

Below are a couple of side-by-side shots of the two styles. I worked the green and blue with worsted weight yarn and a size 6.5mm hook. The orange and blue was made with two strands of worsted and a size 10mm hook. The results are very different textures! By working three rows per color stripe on the standard and two rows per color stripe with the extra thick, I got the same size blanket with matching thickness of stripes. Yippee!
